The sentencing range agreed to by lawyers calls for a potential punishment between roughly 12 years and 17 years in prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/2021\/12\/09\/couple-accused-in-navy-submarine-spy-case-wanted-to-leave-us-because-of-trump-lawyer-says\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21285768589051.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Couple accused in Navy submarine spy case wanted to leave US because of Trump, lawyer says<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Prosecutors have until later this month to respond to the defense motion.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toebbe and his wife, Diana, were arrested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/2021\/10\/19\/us-couple-accused-in-submarine-espionage-case-indicted\/\" target=\"_blank\">last October<\/a> after prosecutors said he had repeatedly sold information about the submarines to someone he thought was a representative of a foreign government but who was actually an undercover FBI agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toebbe acknowledged during the plea hearing to conspiring to pass classified information to a foreign government, causing \u201cinjury to the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/2021\/10\/21\/woman-charged-in-submarine-spy-case-to-remain-locked-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diana Toebbe<\/a> was accused of serving as a lookout at several prearranged \u201cdead-drop\u201d locations at which her husband deposited memory cards containing government secrets, concealing them in objects such as a chewing gum wrapper, a Band-Aid wrapper and a peanut butter sandwich. She has pleaded not guilty and the case against her remains pending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The country to which Jonathan Toebbe was looking to sell the information has not been identified in court documents and was not disclosed in court during the plea hearing Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toebbe, who as part of his job had a top-secret security clearance, agreed as part of the plea deal to help federal officials with locating all classified information in his possession, as well as the roughly $100,000 in cryptocurrency that was paid to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FBI agents who searched the couple\u2019s Annapolis, Maryland, home found a trash bag of shredded documents, thousands of dollars in cash, valid children\u2019s passports and a \u201cgo-bag\u201d containing a USB flash drive and latex gloves.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jonathan Toebbe, pleaded guilty in federal court
