House Democrats are pre-emptively launching a new website to counter Republican claims about the fatal 2012 terror attack on the U.S. embassy compound in Benghazi in advance of the first hearing of the new House committee created to investigate that attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Democrats have complained for months that most of the key questions about the attack have been “asked and answered” without any proof of wrongdoing by the Obama administration and, in particular, then-secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After several other committee probes, House Republicans created a special committee on Benghazi to centralize and advance the investigation. That panel holds its first public hearing Wednesday, to discuss implementation of recommendations from the State Department’s internal review of the Benghazi attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But the Democratic members of the committee launched a new website Tuesday that catalogs all of the answers that have already been provided to questions about how the U.S. military, the State Department and the White House reacted to the attack and its aftermath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the committee, said he believe that people are unaware of “just how much work has already been done” in the various investigations of Benghazi, so he thought it worthwhile to make all that information available. “This resource is intended to be used as a tool for both Members of Congress and the American people,” he said. “I also sincerely hope that it will be utilized by the Select Committee to ensure that we make full use of the extensive investigations that have already been completed to define our scope, avoid duplication, and conserve taxpayer dollars while helping to improve the security of U.S. facilities and personnel around the world.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The site is organized around key questions, such as “Why was security in Benghazi inadequate despite repeated requests?” And “Did Ambassador Rice intentionally misrepresent the facts on Sunday talk shows after the attacks?” Each question then has links to relevant passages from various investigations or hearings that have already been conducted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Republican spokesman for the committee did not respond to a request for comment on the Democrats’ new site.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
