The Pentagon\u2019s inspector general wants to know whether U.S. Central Command, the Defense Health Agency and the services properly screen personnel and recommended them for medical treatment, according to a project announced Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the second project announcement of its kind. DoD IG announced the first version of the project in July 2020, spokeswoman Dwrena Allen confirmed to Military Times on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest evaluation \u201cwill delve deeper into some of the items we learned in the first project,\u201d she said. \u201cThe first project is expected for completion soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The al-Asad attack<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/01\/22\/trump-says-he-doesnt-consider-brain-injuries-sustained-by-us-troops-after-iran-missile-barrage-serious\/\" target=\"_blank\"> made headlines in early 2020 <\/a>not just because it was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/02\/16\/tensions-mount-after-3-rockets-hit-us-base-in-iraq-1-contractor-dead-1-us-troop-8-contractors-injured\/\" target=\"_blank\"> retaliation<\/a> for the U.S. assassination of a top Iranian general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It turned into a controversy from the Pentagon to the White House, after officials initially announced there had been no casualties, but updates in the following days showed dozens of mild traumatic brain injuries from the missiles\u2019 impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked about it during a press conference, then-President Donald Trump downplayed the seriousness of head injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI heard that they had headaches, and a couple of other things,\u201d he said at the time, later offering amputations as an example of a more concerning injury. \u201cBut I would say, and I can report, that it is not very serious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/10\/29\/this-study-is-recruiting-troops-for-mild-tbi-research\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MRI-technician.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This study is recruiting troops for mild TBI research<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">An MRI upgrade could make it easier for doctors to detect mild traumatic brain injuries with a scan.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those headaches, of course, are the early signs of an injury that the military is still trying to understand. Mild TBI, especially repeated, has been linked to a host of long-term <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/mental-health-disorders-common-following-mild-head-injury\" target=\"_blank\">behavioral health risks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The IG\u2019s project aims to review the military\u2019s protocols for diagnosing, reporting and tracking such injuries, in order to ensure proper follow-up care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evaluation is expected to begin in October, according to the
