The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/2021\/12\/30\/hawaii-news\/navy-says-its-water-could-be-cleaned-by-end-of-january\/\">Honolulu Star-Advertiser<\/a>&nbsp;reported that the Navy said in early December it would be able to do the work in a matter of weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy officials believe about 14,000 gallons (52,995 liters) of jet fuel spilled Nov. 20 in an access tunnel at the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility, and some of it was sent through the Navy\u2019s water distribution system that serves about 93,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2021\/12\/21\/pentagon-ig-will-investigate-management-of-hawaii-fuel-storage-facility-at-center-of-water-crisis\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Red-Hill-Bulk-Fuel-Storage-Facility.Hirono-visit.-2015.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pentagon IG will investigate management of Hawaii fuel storage facility at center of water crisis<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The investigation was requested by Hawaii&#039;s congressional delegation in light of the toxic water crisis at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam affecting military personnel and families.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People using the water in and near the Pearl Harbor military installation reported becoming ill, and the Navy moved many military families into Oahu hotels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/12\/13\/navy-dive-team-is-trying-to-remove-fuel-from-hawaii-water\/\" target=\"_blank\">cleaned the spill at the aging Red Hill storage facility<\/a>, which supplies fuel for many military planes and ships that operate in the Pacific. It is pumping clean water through the overall water system and the systems of all affected homes and facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe plan includes complete flushing of the entire Navy system, from the source to the faucet, with a comprehensive series of water tests in every neighborhood to certify that drinking water meets safe drinking water standards,\u201d Navy Rear Adm. Blake Converse told lawmakers during a joint briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy said it will test 10 percent of homes, which some lawmakers questioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe 10 percent, it is a sort of statistical determination based on past events, based on academia, based on the capacity of existing labs,\u201d said Rear Adm. John Korka, commander of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Korka said there is also a \u201cconfidence factor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
