{"id":71125,"date":"2016-04-07T15:08:38","date_gmt":"2016-04-07T15:08:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/04\/07\/50000-veterans-and-families-have-signed-up-to-drive-uber\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:45:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:45:36","slug":"50000-veterans-and-families-have-signed-up-to-drive-uber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/education-transition\/2016\/04\/07\/50000-veterans-and-families-have-signed-up-to-drive-uber\/","title":{"rendered":"50,000 veterans and families have signed up to drive Uber"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>UberMilitary <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">announced Thursday that it <\/span>has reached its goal of signing up 50,000 members of the military community to become drivers, the company\u00a0announced Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative began<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> launched<\/span> in September 2014, and half of the 50,000 have taken their first ride so far.\u00a0To celebrate, the company is donating $1 million to veterans service organizations\u00a0on behalf of its UberMilitary Advisory Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Todd Bowers, Marine veteran and UberMilitary director, told Military Times that\u00a0working for Uber helps veterans and their families transition back into civilian life. He said the military drivers he\u2019s spoken\u00a0to name <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">say the <\/span>flexibility <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">is <\/span>as the biggest selling point:\u00a0They can earn an income while they continue the job hunt or save <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">up <\/span>money to go back to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I compare it to the lance corporal who&#8217;s just getting out of the service in February and wants to go back to college,&#8221; Bowers said. &#8220;He has that awkward six to eight months until classes start. Uber helps him fill that gap and helps with the transition.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robert Isaac, a Marine veteran in the San Francisco area, said he started driving for Uber when he decided to change careers. Fares can increase by as much as sevenfold during the busiest time, which Uber says will be between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m.(AP Photo\/Julio Cortez, File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Smartphones display Uber car availability in New York on Nov. 21, 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>Photo Credit: Julio Cortez\/AP<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I enlisted, but my family got drafted,&#8221; he said. &#8220;[Military families] find themselves in these places where over the space of a 20-year career, they might move up to eight times.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bowers said it&#8217;s easy for the service member to keep their job, but it&#8217;s tougher for the spouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kia Hamel, a Navy veteran who&#8217;s married to an active-duty sailor, said she was trying to get back into the job market after her husband was transferred to the Washington, D.C., area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;There were not a lot of government jobs because of sequestration, so I started looking at various opportunities that would afford me the flexibility to make my schedule,&#8221; said Hamel, who has been with Uber since 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamel is considering going to law school<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span> and <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">she <\/span>said it\u2019s helpful to have the extra income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a very good fit for veterans who are transitioning into other careers and are still trying to make up their mind on what they want to do,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">Bowers said <\/span>UberMilitary\u2019s next goal is to help military drivers earn $500 million by 2020,\u00a0Bowers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is going to be a tough one to go for, but we&#8217;re going to go for it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It comes down to the earning opportunity and potential of these individuals that we really want to focus on.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another focus is <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">increasing <\/span>improving reliable transportation for military communities and lowering\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">decreasing <\/span>the number of alcohol-related incidents near military installations, Bowers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Having served, you&#8217;re always just one degree away from someone who&#8217;s had an incident,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We want to create a safe environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UberMilitary is also working on allowing drivers to earn more money when they start or end a trip at a military installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Never before have we had this type of economic independence available to veterans and their families,&#8221; Bowers said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Charlsy Panzino covers veterans education, employment and transition issues, as well as travel, entertainment and fitness.
