{"id":71345,"date":"2022-08-24T20:14:07","date_gmt":"2022-08-24T20:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/08\/24\/travel-reimbursement-for-vets-seeking-care-falls-short-senator-warns\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:05:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:05:24","slug":"travel-reimbursement-for-vets-seeking-care-falls-short-senator-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2022\/08\/24\/travel-reimbursement-for-vets-seeking-care-falls-short-senator-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"Travel reimbursement for vets seeking care falls short, senator warns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A top Democratic senator is pushing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2022\/08\/12\/va-secretary-tests-positive-for-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs officials<\/a> to speed up reforms to the department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/health-care\/get-reimbursed-for-travel-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\">travel reimbursement program<\/a>, saying shortcomings in the system are hurting rural veterans\u2019 finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVeterans and caregivers are contacting my office now more than ever to request assistance with the Beneficiary Travel Self-Service System, and express deep frustration and their belief that VA is keeping veterans from accessing their earned benefits,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/02\/28\/with-new-leadership-roles-tester-hopes-to-bridge-gap-between-defense-veterans-policy-work\/\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Veterans Affairs\u2019 Committee Chairman Jon Tester<\/a>, D-Mont., wrote in a letter to VA leadership on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDespite a number of improvements and commitments by VA to address the concerns of veterans, Montana veterans and those nationwide are not reaping the impact of those efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans traveling for care at a VA health facility (or for approved care at a non-VA health facility) can be reimbursed for travel costs if they have a disability rating of at least 30% or meet other financial or medical requirements. Caregivers can also qualify for reimbursement under certain circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/08\/16\/comparing-va-home-loans-to-other-options-would-be-easier-in-new-plan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/3084641.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why comparing VA home loans to other options might soon get easier<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Advocates have expressed concerns many veterans are missing out on benefits from the VA home loan program.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department currently pays 41.4 cents per mile for approved travel, along with other expenses such as parking and tolls. For veterans with lengthy trips to the nearest VA medical facilities, the travel costs can total a full tank of gas or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA launched electronic filing for travel reimbursement claims in late 2020, but Tester said that expansion hasn\u2019t helped individuals in rural areas and families already facing significant financial problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany veterans, especially those most in need of financial assistance for transportation to and from medical appointments, do not have a computer or a smart phone,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA also did not account for inconsistent access to internet \u2014 especially in areas like rural Montana where it can be a luxury to have access to reliable and fast internet and public computers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In correspondence with Tester last year, VA officials promised to increase access to internet-connected tablets and computers at department locations to help ease access to the online filing systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Tester said public awareness of those options remains low, and training for the veterans who need the services is sporadic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chairman noted that travel reimbursement requests from veterans were down about 23% from fiscal 2019 to fiscal 2021. He said he doubts lower travel during the pandemic accounts for all of that difference, since in-person medical appointments were only down 14% over that same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor many rural veterans who have to drive great distances for care or veterans stretching every grocery trip and tank of gas, [missing out on travel reimbursements] will mean skipping necessary medical care,\u201d Tester wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More information on the travel reimbursement program is available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/health-care\/get-reimbursed-for-travel-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\">the VA website.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
