{"id":71385,"date":"2022-08-29T17:39:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-29T17:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/08\/29\/troops-can-now-get-novavax-as-a-covid-19-vaccine\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:06:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:06:05","slug":"troops-can-now-get-novavax-as-a-covid-19-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/08\/29\/troops-can-now-get-novavax-as-a-covid-19-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"Troops can now get Novavax as a COVID-19 vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2022\/06\/09\/new-vaccine-may-be-option-for-troops-with-religious-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\">A new choice for COVID-19 vaccination<\/a> is available in military clinics as of Monday, the Defense Department announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Novavax, a two-dose vaccine that uses different technology and ingredients from previously released inoculations, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/08\/11\/the-national-guard-has-a-new-weapon-in-the-fight-for-covid-vaccination\/\" target=\"_blank\">now an option for service members.<\/a> However, service members can only be compelled to take the Food and Drug Administration-approved Pfizer or Moderna products as part of the military\u2019s vaccination mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough all vaccines teach our immune system to recognize the spike protein on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, Novavax is unique compared to other available COVID-19 vaccines in that it is a protein subunit vaccine,\u201d Air Force Col. Tonya Rans, chief of the Immunization Healthcare Division at the Defense Health Agency, said in the DoD release.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=c16de5fe-da69-43b6-a8cb-2bb8e44f8a6f\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-c16de5fe-da69-43b6-a8cb-2bb8e44f8a6f.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">It&#8217;s the Oklahoma National Guard and the state&#8217;s governor versus the Pentagon on the vaccine &#8211; can the Guard even do that?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s similar to technology used in the shingles and hepatitis B vaccines, the latter of which is required for military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military leadership is hoping that Novavax, which is under an emergency use authorization by the FDA, will present as a viable alternative for troops who are still refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Novavax is not made with, nor tested on, cells from fetal tissue. It also doesn\u2019t use mRNA to deliver the vaccine into cells, another objection cited by those who have declined to get vaccinated, including dozens of troops who have joined lawsuits against the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/02\/18\/could-the-supreme-court-strike-down-the-militarys-vaccination-mandate\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/50824678146_c365d55237_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Could the Supreme Court strike down the military\u2019s vaccination mandate?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Multiple lawsuits are arguing that the military is blanketly refusing religious exemptions for the COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vaccine doesn\u2019t, however, meet another of the criteria that detractors cite: because it\u2019s under EUA, it\u2019s what many anti-vaccine advocates have erroneously dubbed an \u201cexperimental\u201d vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Aug. 24, 1,992,507 service members are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, with another 30,000 who have received the first of a two-dose regimen. That brings the services, both active and reserve components, to just under 90% at least partially vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The largest number of unvaccinated troops remains in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve, whose deadlines lapsed at the end of June, more than six months after their counterparts in the other services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs soon as [Novavax] was approved, we started ordering that and we\u2019re getting it out to all of our states,\u201d Chief of the National Guard Bureau Army Gen.
