{"id":71390,"date":"2022-08-23T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-23T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/08\/23\/study-to-examine-reasons-for-infertility-among-recent-war-veterans\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:05:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:05:24","slug":"study-to-examine-reasons-for-infertility-among-recent-war-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/08\/23\/study-to-examine-reasons-for-infertility-among-recent-war-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"Study to examine reasons for infertility among recent war veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers on Tuesday announced plans for a new study to discover reasons why veterans from the recent wars are more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/03\/09\/lawmakers-eye-cutting-restrictions-expanding-infertility-help-for-veterans\/\" target=\"_blank\">struggle with infertility<\/a> than their civilian peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givelegacy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">fertility clinic Legacy<\/a> will partner with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2022\/08\/12\/va-secretary-tests-positive-for-coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a> for the study, which will test sperm collected from more than 1,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/08\/19\/a-year-after-afghanistans-fall-a-marine-veteran-reflects-on-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global War On Terror veterans<\/a> to look for common problems among the population. The goal is to use the findings to expand the fertility services offered by VA in coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a VA physician, I have witnessed firsthand veterans struggling with family building,\u201d Dr. Ryan Vega, the Veterans Health Administration\u2019s healthcare innovation chief, said in a statement. \u201cThis effort is important to further understanding and tackling a challenge so many of our nation\u2019s veterans face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2018\/12\/14\/do-military-women-have-higher-rates-of-infertility-than-civilians\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-868502474.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Do military women have higher rates of infertility than civilians?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Group calls for more data and more research on infertility in military women and men.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Past studies have indicated that the rate of infertility among veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan may be twice as high as comparable civilians, but the reasons for that are unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from Legacy said they plan to study multiple variables \u2014 including burn pit exposure during service, traumatic brain injury side effects, and ongoing post-traumatic stress disorder \u2014 to see what role they play in conceiving a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study will focus on men only, but organizers said they hope the findings will help improve fertility services across VA in years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are a lot of parameters we can look at from a single sample,\u201d said John Crowley, head of military affairs at Legacy. \u201cFor the Defense Department and VA, this will help them see where the sperm are underperforming and why, with respect to deployments and associated injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sperm samples will be collected and tested, then cryogenically stored to be reanalyzed six months later to identify any additional issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/opinion\/2022\/04\/13\/why-many-military-families-are-struggling-to-have-kids\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/131107-F-CY182-045.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why many military families are struggling to have kids<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Two military spouses who have dealt with fertility issues share their stories on this episode of The Spouse Angle podcast.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the terms of the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between VA and Legacy, the company will cover the cost of cryopreservation for all study participants through December 2023. VA will be responsible for covering the cost of any continued preservation after then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials expect to release a report on their findings in early
