Individuals who owe money will not have to pay it back until early 2023 if they can show the move would cause financial hardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHelping Veterans manage, pay off and, in some cases, eliminate their debt is one of our top priorities,\u201d VA Secretary Denis McDonough said in a statement. \u201cExtending this hardship suspension is a key part of that critical effort, and it will help ease the burden for veterans who are living with debt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/08\/29\/plan-to-ease-gi-bill-reporting-rules-for-colleges-signed-into-law\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/navy-college.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Plan to ease GI Bill reporting rules for colleges signed into law<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The law had received bipartisan support in Congress as a way to help school administrators.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2020, VA officials stopped collecting the benefits debts as part of a series of moves designed to ease issues caused by the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last fall, department leaders announced they would resume collections, but offered continued relief for veterans facing financial difficulties. That authority was scheduled to expire Sept. 30, but will now be extended three more months to the end of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said the move this time was made not because of the ongoing pandemic, but instead in response to inflation pressures on family finances. Jon Tester wants more resources to help rural vets get money from the program.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joseph Schmitt, director of VA\u2019s Debt Management Center, said officials have also taken several steps in recent years to simplify the debt collection process, to include more options for veterans to apply for partial or full debt forgiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those steps include establishing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/manage-va-debt\" target=\"_blank\">new web site for veterans to check their accounts<\/a> and see options for debt repayment. More than 1.3 million veterans have visited the site in the last 20 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans can also contact the Debt Management Center at 800-827-0648 to discuss
