Suicide prevention is possible,\u201d McDonough says in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1HuFHqwvFKg\" target=\"_blank\">the public service announcement<\/a>. \u201cAnd we have made great strides in veteran suicide prevention and intervention. But we still have a lot of work to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both departments have emphasized suicide prevention in recent years, with mixed results. The rate of suicide among veterans and servicemembers is higher than that of American civilians, but researchers have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/09\/08\/veteran-suicides-decreased-7-percent-in-2019-to-lowest-level-in-12-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">decreases in the number of deaths<\/a> in the latest state and federal data available.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/07\/18\/new-988-suicide-prevention-hotline-gives-vets-troops-an-easier-option-for-emergency-care\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"175\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/988.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New 988 suicide prevention hotline gives vets, troops an easier option for emergency care<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Officials expect a spike in requests for veteran suicide prevention services even though the new hotline isn&#039;t aimed specifically at military individuals.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Austin and McDonough said both departments are working on collaborative efforts to address the problem, but added that those solutions will need to include help from the veterans community and the general public, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s be clear, mental health is health, period,\u201d Austin says in the new message. \u201cAnd it\u2019s on all of us to end the stigma of asking for help and support when we or someone we know is feeling distressed or anxious, or isolated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to ask each of you, regardless of rank or title, to stay connected with your friends, and your family members and your teammates. And if you\u2019re hurting, support is within reach.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An estimated 17 veterans a day die by suicide, according to the latest VA data available. When active duty troops and reservists are included in that calculation, the number is roughly 20 a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Veterans can reach the Veterans Crisis line by dialing 988 or 1-800-273-8255 and selecting option 1 after connecting to reach a VA staffer. In addition, veterans, troops or their family members can also text 838255 or visit <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/veteranscrisisline.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>VeteransCrisisLine.net<\/i><\/a><i> for
