A new measure designed to ease requirements for veterans to join the U.S. Merchant Marine<\/a> will be introduced in the Senate Wednesday with an eye towards attaching the proposal to must-pass defense legislation later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Military to Mariners Act \u2014 co-sponsored by Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas<\/a>; Maria Cantwell, D-Wash.; and Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc. \u2014 would require a federal review of credentialing rules for veterans looking to become merchant mariners<\/a> and improvements to the application process with an eye towards making it easier for individuals with military experience to be accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[The bill] is a bipartisan win-win for our nation\u2019s veterans, active-duty servicemembers and our maritime industry,\u201d Cruz said in a statement. \u201cThis clears the path for some of our nation\u2019s best to step into high demand, well-paying jobs as merchant mariners without being burdened by red tape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
