The pair toured operations at the Washington D.C. VA Medical Center and spoke to staffers administering the vaccines to patients.,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is so important as we head into the holidays,\u201d McDonough told reporters. \u201cSo many of our veterans have had to isolate for the last couple of years, leading to missing their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow our veterans, having access to the updated bivalent boosters and flu vaccine, can be reunited with their families at this critically important time of year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/12\/04\/keep-covid-19-military-vaccine-mandate-defense-secretary-says\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22055041658223.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Keep COVID-19 military vaccine mandate, defense secretary says<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is making clear he wants to keep the military\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine mandate in place to protect the health of the troops.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The effort is part of the White House\u2019s six-week push to get millions of Americans vaccinated ahead of another expected surge in COVID-19 cases. More than 98 million cases of COVID-19 infection have been recorded in America since the start of the pandemic in spring 2020, and at least 1,075,000 have died from complications related to the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among veterans in the VA health care system, more than 805,000 have contracted the virus and more than 23,400 have died. Those numbers do not include every veteran in America, because not every veteran relies on VA as their primary medical care provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Active cases of coronavirus across the VA medical system have spiked in recent weeks, rising about 60% in the last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough said he has not yet seen a significant increase in the number of VA staff unable to work because of coronavirus infections, but officials are closely monitoring for signs of trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department health officials have said they expect a spike in cases over the winter months (similar to what public health officials have seen over the last two years) and are prepared to handle the wave of incoming cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But McDonough and Becerra said Monday that veterans can stave off some of the most serious complications of the virus by getting updated booster shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/coronavirus\/2022\/10\/19\/va-officials-confident-theyre-ready-for-the-next-covid-surge\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22280451319869.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA officials confident they\u2019re ready for the next COVID surge<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Coronavirus cases among VA patients are up slightly from October 2021.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re trying to guarantee you life,\u201d Becerra said. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to make sure folks won\u2019t be hospitalized. We\u2019re trying to get you past the serious infections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve all seen that whether you\u2019re boosted or vaccinated, you can still be infected. The question is whether you can survive that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Health and Human Services has more than 70,000 locations nationwide for Americans to receive free COVID-19 booster shots. A full list is available through t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccines.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">heir vaccine web site. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans can also contact any VA medical center to learn about vaccine availability and distribution policies.
