(CSIS)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy expectation is that military leaders in Hawaii will continue to do everything they can \u2014 as fast as they can \u2014 to return residents safely back to their homes and to communicate clearly and frequently the steps they are taking to do so,\u201d Austin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conflicting reports originally came out regarding the water contamination issue. Originally, the Navy stated that there was no fuel detected in base water. That was later disproved by further tests conducted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.staradvertiser.com\/2021\/11\/29\/breaking-news\/navy-is-investigating-possible-fuel-chemical-contamination-of-water-at-joint-base-pearl-harbor-hickam\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hawaii Department of Health<\/a> and a private water testing laboratory in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question as to how the water became contaminated is also unclear. The first official statements on the matter stated fuel leaked from the facility. However, a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/12\/12\/navy-blames-hawaii-water-contamination-on-jet-fuel-spill\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Dec. 12 statement<\/a> from the Navy claims that the leak was actually a spill from inside one of the facility\u2019s access tunnels and not from the structure itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Red Hill Facility was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/12\/09\/navy-secretary-suspends-operations-at-red-hill-fuel-storage-facility-following-water-contamination\/\" target=\"_blank\">shut down<\/a> Nov. 28 for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ernest Lau, manager and chief engineer for Hawaii\u2019s<b> <\/b>Board of Water Supply, said the Navy was also downplaying the issue at a separate water source known as the Aiea-Halawa well, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/12\/10\/fuel-detected-near-another-hawaiian-water-well-us-senator-call-for-epas-involvement\/\" target=\"_blank\">recorded contamination levels<\/a> Dec. 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI got a call a couple hours later, from the same person in the Navy, basically trying to downplay the test result as not indicative of what\u2019s in the aquifer,\u201d Lau said. \u201cSo my question to that individual was: \u2018Wasn\u2019t the water in that pipe you took the sample from coming out of that shaft? If it\u2019s not coming out of the shaft, where did the diesel come from?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan moving forward, Hicks said, is for her to personally work with other DoD senior leaders to ensure that the water crisis remains in the spotlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am committed to ensuring the health and well-being for our service members, their families, the people of Hawaii, and the environment,\u201d Hicks said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hicks also met with Hawaii Gov. David Ige, senators Mazie Hirono and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/12\/10\/fuel-detected-near-another-hawaiian-water-well-us-senator-call-for-epas-involvement\/\"
