{"id":71879,"date":"2022-12-30T18:01:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-30T18:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/12\/30\/new-in-2023-va-health-records-overhaul-faces-critical-juncture\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:14:49","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:14:49","slug":"new-in-2023-va-health-records-overhaul-faces-critical-juncture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2022\/12\/30\/new-in-2023-va-health-records-overhaul-faces-critical-juncture\/","title":{"rendered":"New in 2023:  VA health records overhaul faces critical juncture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Veterans Affairs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/21\/stress-over-vas-new-health-records-is-causing-staffers-to-leave\/\" target=\"_blank\">electronic health records overhaul<\/a> has been underway for five years, but events coming in 2023 could decide whether the effort still has any future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 10-year, $16 billion<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/10\/13\/va-delays-health-record-rollout-again-this-time-until-summer-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\"> health records modernization project<\/a> started in 2017 under then President Donald Trump and was touted as a way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/03\/07\/concerns-over-va-electronic-health-records-mount-after-another-system-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\">provide better care to troops and veterans<\/a> throughout their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans health records have been shifted from an aging, internal VA records system to private-sector software maintained by Oracle-Cerner that is compatible with military health records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to allow VA and the Department of Defense to more easily share health care information, providing seamless service to individuals as they leave the military and transition to civilian life.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/09\/21\/stress-over-vas-new-health-records-is-causing-staffers-to-leave\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Electronic-health-records-DVIDS.6595521.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Stress over VA\u2019s new health records is causing staffers to leave<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">VA leaders expressed major concerns about where the records modernization project currently stands.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But implementation so far has been problematic. VA has paused its planned rollout of the system to new sites after numerous issues with program use at the first few medical centers. In September, the head of the Veterans Health Administration told lawmakers that problems with the new system have encouraged some staffers to quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, VA Secretary Denis McDonough vowed to improve training and minimize problems with the system, and ordered a halt to all new records system deployments until June 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That move risks pushing the timeline for deployment throughout VA past 2027, a move that government watchdogs have warned could add hundreds of millions more to the final price tag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But McDonough has said the pause is needed to ensure the system is working properly and that patients aren\u2019t put at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/10\/13\/va-delays-health-record-rollout-again-this-time-until-summer-2023\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1413724.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA delays health record rollout again \u2014 this time until summer 2023<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Officials had hoped to start putting the system in new sites early next year, but will now wait at least six more months.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, several lawmakers \u2014 including key Republican members of the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee \u2014 have said they now question if the records system is still worth the cost. They\u2019re expected to hold hearings next year on progress with the system, and ask whether continuing to spend money on the overhaul is worthwhile to taxpayers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far, McDonough has insisted it is. But he also left open the possibility that may change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to stay on this thing to make it work, because the idea is so profoundly in the national interest,\u201d he told Military Times in November. \u201cBut if it\u2019s not workable, we\u2019re not going to just spin our
