{"id":71952,"date":"2021-10-23T18:12:09","date_gmt":"2021-10-23T18:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/10\/23\/despite-drug-shortages-military-has-mostly-been-able-to-find-alternative-supplies\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:07:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:07:11","slug":"despite-drug-shortages-military-has-mostly-been-able-to-find-alternative-supplies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2021\/10\/23\/despite-drug-shortages-military-has-mostly-been-able-to-find-alternative-supplies\/","title":{"rendered":"Despite drug shortages, military has mostly been able to find alternative supplies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amidst news reports of increasing prescription drug shortages \u2014 worsened by current national supply chain issues \u2014 military officials say they\u2019ve been able to work around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do not see any trends on medication prescription shortages other than those listed on the [American Society of Health System Pharmacists] and [Food and Drug Administration] websites,\u201d said Michelle McCaskill, spokeswoman for the Defense Logistics Agency, when asked if current supply chain issues are affecting military treatment facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor the most part, we\u2019re able to assist our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/mil-money\/2021\/10\/01\/pharmacy-costs-increasing-jan-1-for-active-duty-families-retirees-and-others\/\" target=\"_blank\">military health system<\/a> partners with finding available alternatives for procurement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of Friday, there were 193 drug shortages listed on the ASHP website; and 117 drug shortages listed on the FDA website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are not experiencing anything out of the ordinary,\u201d said Peter Graves, spokesman for the Military Health System, which includes military treatment facilities. Military beneficiaries can get covered generic and brand-name prescription drugs at no cost at MTFs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military beneficiaries also get their prescriptions filled at Tricare retail network pharmacies, and through the Tricare Pharmacy Home Delivery, operated by Express Scripts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supply chain issues have plagued many companies and consumers nationwide, due to such COVID-related problems as product shortages and labor shortages, port congestion and other logistics problems. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/mil-money\/2021\/08\/25\/can-military-commissaries-help-you-fight-food-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\">Commissary <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/2021\/10\/11\/military-exchanges-battling-supply-chain-issues-urge-customers-not-to-wait-on-holiday-shopping\/\" target=\"_blank\">exchange <\/a>stocks have also been affected, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/2021\/10\/08\/military-moves-the-trail-of-misery-continues-with-long-delays-families-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">military families\u2019 household goods shipments<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, even before COVID, the American Medical Association has been warning of national drug shortages. In November 2020, the AMA warned that an uptick of national drug shortages, exacerbated by the pandemic, further \u201dthreaten patient care and safety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AMA\u2019s House of Delegates adopted policy last November underscoring drug shortages as an \u201curgent public health crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The AMA cited the top five classes of drugs in short supply at the time as being central nervous system medications, antimicrobials, cardiovascular medications, and ophthalmic and chemotherapy agents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>National supply chain issues are causing more drug shortages, according to reports.
