Songwriter Don Goodman knows this well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He helped to write the song \u201cMama\u2019s Bible,\u201d about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doakhowellfuneralhome.com\/obituary\/jb-stubblefield\" target=\"_blank\">World War II veteran J.B. Stubblefield<\/a> who passed on Sept. 8 and was honored at this year\u2019s American Mule and Bluegrass Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The album, \u201cFreedom Sings WWII\u201d in which Stubblefield\u2019s song is featured, has 15 songs on it, all written about other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/military-honor\/salute-veterans\/2022\/06\/05\/world-war-ii-veterans-honored-a-day-before-d-day-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Ward II veterans<\/a>. \u201cTo sit there and listen to their stories and go back to World War Two with them is amazing,\u201d Goodman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goodman said he wants them to tell them their whole story so he can make the song really personal. \u201cIt\u2019s not just another war song; it\u2019s their song,\u201d he said. He loves the details like where they were born, where they served, who they married when they came home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to pull out what they\u2019ve never told anybody,\u201d he said. It works. Family members come up to Goodman and say, \u201cI never knew my dad did that&#8230;\u201d or \u201cI think I know now why my dad cries so much&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s when I know I\u2019ve nailed it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some 22 veterans, of all ages and wars, take their lives every day. And out of those 15 veterans on the album, Goodman says only two are still alive today. The average age is 100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, we\u2019re losing our veterans,\u201d he said. Goodman said every single one of the veterans\u2019 songs was played at the funeral. Even through the heartache, Goodman takes it as a compliment as it goes to show how important the songs are to the family.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2022\/09\/22\/101st-airborne-division-sends-500-troops-to-funeral-for-d-day-legend\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7428675.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">101st Airborne Division sends 500 troops to funeral for D-Day \u2018legend\u2019<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Jim &quot;Pee Wee&quot; Martin&#039;s funeral was attended by more than 500 soldiers of 101st Airborne Division, Martin&#039;s unit during World War II.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo me, it\u2019s like a kid finding a diary and going wow, this is grandpa,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goodman, who\u2019s 78, has been writing for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomsingsusa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Freedom Sings USA<\/a> for about eight years now. He was 70 years old at the time and felt the music industry was changing too much. \u201cThe new music, it wasn\u2019t me and I didn\u2019t want to write it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One day, he got invited to the VA where he sat in on one of the writing sessions with the veterans. \u201cIt was life changing. I came out of there that day on a mission,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born in Hohenwald and raised in Detroit, Goodman came to Nashville in 1971. He says you don\u2019t \u201cget into songwriting; it gets into you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI hitchhiked into town, honestly, with a shoebox full of songs. And they were awful. But I just felt in my heart, that\u2019s where I was supposed to be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBack in the day,\u201d Goodman wrote several hits, including \u201cOl\u2019 Red,\u201d sung by George Jones, \u201cAngels Among Us\u201d recorded by Alabama, and Conway Twitty\u2019s \u201cFeelin\u2019s\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve written, I don\u2019t know, 2-3,000 songs maybe.\u201d He jokes he\u2019s the world\u2019s worst guitar player and an even worse singer. So he always surrounded him with talented musicians and singers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter a while, you can hear the melody in your head,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, he has written over 300 songs with the veterans, stretching from World War II to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2022\/06\/21\/korean-war-marine-veterans-enjoy-reunion-almost-70-years-in-the-making\/\" target=\"_blank\">Korea<\/a> to the Gulf Wars.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2022\/09\/09\/85-year-old-medal-of-honor-pilot-makes-1st-airplane-jump\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DSC04883.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">85-year-old Medal of Honor pilot makes 1st airplane jump<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">&#039;I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever moved that fast or been in anything that moved that fast in my life,&#039; Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Patrick Brady said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story of J.B. Stubblefield is remarkable, and Goodman said they were able to capture it in three and half minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While serving in the Second World War, Stubblefield got separated from his troops while stationed in New Guinea. He went MIA. They didn\u2019t find him until two years later. Goodman said he was lying half-in, half-out of a river suffering with amnesia and dying from malaria. But they identified him through a pocket-sized Bible given to him by his mama, where his name was written on the inside cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI tried to squeeze every bit of actual information into that song I could. I mean, I could\u2019ve written a book,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donovan Chapman, a Billboard Top 40 singer, sang the song \u201cMama\u2019s Bible.\u201d \u201cI enjoy the fact that I can help capture the story and capitalize on what they did,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The night before Stubblefield passed, he got to hear \u201cMama\u2019s Bible\u201d for the first and last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goodman recalls, \u201cWe recorded the song that afternoon. They got the mix to me at about 6:30. At 7 o\u2019clock, I sent it to Perry Stubblefield, J.B.\u2019s son. And at 7:30, they played it for him. And he died the next night,\u201d he said. \u201cWe got it there, in the 11th hour.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the songwriting is not just veterans. Goodman recalled one time when he sat down with an 8-year-old girl whose daddy was killed in Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goodman quotes, \u201cShe wrote: Mama pushed me in the swing so high, up to heaven where the angels fly. I want to go where daddies go and never die. Mama pushed me in the swing so high.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says the greatest compliments are when the veterans say they listened to the song a hundred times. \u201cWhen you get a phone call from a veteran and he says, \u2018you saved my life,\u2019 a gold or platinum record \u2014 a whole wall of them \u2014 is only a candle to that phone call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know when you get one right \u2014 and it doesn\u2019t matter if the whole world likes it or not \u2014 if you know you got it right and as good as you could possibly do, there is no better feeling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are expanding Freedom Sings USA, including female veteran classes and more opportunities with the VA.
