The militant group once ruled large swaths of both countries but lost its last stronghold in 2019. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2022\/12\/04\/us-military-resumes-joint-patrols-in-north-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\">late December<\/a>, U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces announced \u201cOperation Al-Jazeera Thunderbolt,\u201d citing a surge in IS attacks, to target sleeper cells in the areas of al-Hol and Tal Hamis in the country\u2019s east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CENTCOM did not say where on Wednesday the operation took place. It said there were no civilian casualties, according to an initial assessment of the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CENTCOM Conducts a Partnered D-ISIS Operation with the Syrian Democratic Forces <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TvaS0kCBDA\">pic.twitter.com\/TvaS0kCBDA<\/a><\/p>&mdash; U.S. Central Command (@CENTCOM) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/1616131883791962112?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 19, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It did not identify the Syrian militant, but described the person as a \u201cprovincial media and security operative\u201d who was involved in global recruitment and facilitating and planning operations for the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe capture of this ISIS operative will disrupt the terrorist organization\u2019s ability to further plot and carry out global attacks threatening U.S. citizens, or partners and innocent civilians,\u201d CENTCOM spokesperson Col. Joe Buccino said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are roughly 900 U.S. troops in Syria, including in the north and farther south and east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/home\/2022\/12\/30\/military-operations-killed-more-than-600-isis-fighters-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\">CENTCOM reported conducting some 313 operations against IS in 2022<\/a> in Syria and Iraq, mostly in cooperation with the Syrian Democratic Forces forces.
