Lawmaker files bill to thank troops \u2018for our freedom\u2019 instead"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a meaningless, performative, symbolic effort, a pair of lawmakers have asked their colleagues to endorse replacing the phrase \u201cthank you for your service\u201d \u2014 a phrase many troops and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/02\/22\/sunday-review\/please-dont-thank-me-for-my-service.html\" target=\"_blank\">veterans already consider <\/a>meaningless, performative and symbolic \u2014 with \u201cthank you for our freedom,\u201d which, to the authors\u2019 credit, is somehow even more meaningless, performative and symbolic than the status quo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Mich., filed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-resolution\/1405\/all-info\" target=\"_blank\">non-binding legislation<\/a> Thursday and promptly published a <a href=\"https:\/\/bergman.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=1007\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a> about it. The bill, which would do absolutely nothing outside of unraveling a yellow ribbon bumper sticker empire <i>if<\/i> passed, also has little chance of <i>getting<\/i> passed \u2014 the U.S. House is in recess while members run reelection campaigns, and the legislative session will end shortly after their return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement accompanying the bill\u2019s announcement, Bergman, a retired Marine Reserve three-star general who oozes medically concerning amounts of motivation, said the \u201cresolution will help ensure those of us blessed to call America home understand the personal importance of our servicemen and women\u2019s sacrifice for our Nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll gave some and many made the ultimate sacrifice,\u201d added the bill\u2019s co-sponsor, Rep. Lou Correa, D-Calif., who did not serve in the military &#8230; but is thankful for the freedom to run for reelection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How many of Bergman\u2019s campaign advertisements will mention the bill has not been specified, but we\u2019re willing to place a $5 wager on that number being greater than zero. Our $5 pales in comparison, however, to the $106,702 the House Armed Services Committee member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/members-of-congress\/john-bergman\/industries?cid=N00039533&#038;cycle=2022\" target=\"_blank\">received from the defense industry<\/a> during the current campaign, according to Open Secrets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It remains unclear why the congressmen believe troops need to be continually thanked for \u201cour freedom\u201d after 20 years of near-fetishization of the military, be it in the form of trotting out service members at every professional sporting event, showering veterans in free food \u2014 just from the limited menu! \u2014 from Applebees, or guzzling Navy SEAL input on everything from bird house construction to slam poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Studies show \u201cGet after it!\u201d is the input 93.7% of the time.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There has certainly been no shortage of thanks from Corporate America, hollow as much of it may be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, it took years for the federal government to acknowledge the harm those who actually fought the wars endured from environmental hazards like burn pits.
