{"id":72399,"date":"2022-12-20T19:17:29","date_gmt":"2022-12-20T19:17:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/12\/20\/us-forces-detain-6-islamic-state-group-militants-in-syria\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:09:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:09:27","slug":"us-forces-detain-6-islamic-state-group-militants-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/12\/20\/us-forces-detain-6-islamic-state-group-militants-in-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"US forces detain 6 Islamic State group militants in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BEIRUT \u2014 American forces conducted three raids in eastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2022\/12\/11\/us-raid-kills-2-islamic-state-militants-in-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\">Syria<\/a> and arrested six Islamic State group militants, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/afghanistan\/2022\/02\/08\/centcom-needs-more-resources-to-counter-afghanistan-terror-threat-nominee\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Central Command<\/a> said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In their statement, U.S. Central Command said the raids were conducted over the preceding 48 hours, and identified one of the detained militants as \u201cal-Zubaydi,\u201d a \u201cSyria Province Senior Official\u201d of the group who they say was involved in planning and facilitating attacks in Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Britain-based opposition war monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said two of the three raids took place in the Deir el-Zour and Hassakeh regions, adding that Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces were also involved. They identified four of the detained as Turkmen weapons dealers affiliated with the militant group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two SDF fighters were wounded in one raid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe capture of these ISIS operatives will disrupt the terrorist organization\u2019s ability to further plot and carry out destabilizing attacks,\u201d U.S. Army Gen. Michael \u201cErik\u201d Kurilla said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are some 900 U.S. troops in Syria supporting Kurdish-led forces in the fight against the militant group. They have frequently targeted IS militants mostly in parts of northeastern Syria under Kurdish control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SDF on Monday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/syria-e181dfeb35cf5c695407a6b98a6b782b\" target=\"_blank\">said they had detained a IS militant<\/a>&nbsp;who managed cells in eastern Syria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Syria has been mired in a bloody civil war since 2011 that has drawn in regional and global powers. Syrian President Bashar Assad has mostly regained control of the country, but parts of its north remain under the control of rebels, as well as Turkish and Syrian Kurdish
