{"id":72448,"date":"2018-02-14T00:18:46","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T00:18:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/02\/14\/trump-celebrates-black-history-month-at-white-house-event\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:10:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:10:23","slug":"trump-celebrates-black-history-month-at-white-house-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/military-honor\/2018\/02\/14\/trump-celebrates-black-history-month-at-white-house-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump celebrates Black History Month at White House event"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 President Donald Trump marked African American History Month by pledging Tuesday to make real the vision of \u201cevery American patriot\u201d who fought and sacrificed for freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump celebrated the annual observance at a White House reception under the theme of \u201cAfrican Americans in Times of War.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president saluted black Americans who have served in the military since the Revolution for giving \u201ctheir hearts, their sweat, their blood and their very lives to defend the United States, its flag and its highest ideals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said they helped defend for all Americans the dream of a colorblind society that inspired such civil rights pioneers as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/military-honor\/black-military-history\/2018\/02\/02\/frederick-douglass-unannounced-visit-to-lincolns-white-house-and-the-friendship-it-created\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Frederick Douglass<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/military-honor\/black-military-history\/2018\/02\/07\/general-tubman-female-abolitionist-was-also-a-secret-military-weapon\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Harriett Tubman<\/a>, Booker T. and, just like so many African Americans throughout our history who have struggled and sacrificed for freedom, we must do our part to make that vision real for every single American.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs long as we have faith in our citizens, confidence in our values and trust in God, we will not fail,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vice President Mike Pence marked the occasion earlier Tuesday by visiting the Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of African American History and Culture, a facility he described as \u201challowed ground where we remember a difficult past.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut we remember our progress toward a more perfect union, a progress driven by the sacrifice, the courage, the idealism and the service in uniform of African American men and women,\u201d Pence said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump visited the museum
