And while he didn\u2019t serve in the U.S. military, he decided to donate the entirety of his $1 million winnings to veterans charities in honor of his father, Robert Gabler, a former Green Beret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile I\u2019ve never been in the service myself, to have the honor to serve them is pretty profound to me,\u201d Gabler told host <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/survivor-mike-gabler-donate-veterans-season-43\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeff Probst during the after show<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re gonna save lives, we\u2019re gonna do something good. &#8230; Million dollars is going to them. We made history guys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with<a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/tv\/survivor-43-winner-mike-gabler-finale-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, Gabler said he made the decision before his stint on the show even began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was talking with a buddy of mine who\u2019s a veteran and my wife. And we were talking about, \u2018What if you win this thing?\u2019\u201d he noted. \u201cMy father\u2019s a veteran. My uncles are veterans. A lot of guys I went to high school and college with are veterans. And they need some help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite needing to put two kids through college, Gabler made the decision not to keep the winnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou know, I\u2019ve worked really hard (all) my life,\u201d he told EW. \u201cI\u2019ve built a good financial setup around myself. I\u2019ve got to work another eight years before I can retire. I\u2019ve still got a kid in college, one more to go. I\u2019ve still got a house payment, all that stuff the money would have helped, sure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the thought of contributing to something more than his own stability and happiness is what kept Gabler going during the harshest parts of the contest, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I\u2019m thinking about people who are dependent on me, like veterans in need with a traumatic brain injury or PTSD, that lights a fire in you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is reportedly the first time a \u201cSurvivor\u201d winner has said they intend to donate the entire cash prize to charity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khou.com\/article\/features\/mike-gabler-survivor\/285-5f7bf497-10c8-433f-b684-0afdb8d9b70a\" target=\"_blank\">KHOU
