Jacobson was among the more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/12\/06\/101-year-old-returns-to-pearl-harbor-to-remember-those-lost\/\" target=\"_blank\">400 sailors and Marines killed on the USS Oklahoma<\/a>&nbsp;during&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2016\/12\/03\/pearl-harbor-a-short-history-before-dec-7-1941\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/06\/17\/remains-of-3-brothers-killed-during-pearl-harbor-attack-identified\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/210616-A-ZQ077-001.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Remains of 3 brothers killed during Pearl Harbor attack identified<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">U.S. military officials announced Wednesday that the remains of three brothers from Wisconsin who were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor have been identified.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The casket containing his remains was carried Tuesday morning on a horse-drawn caisson led by a military escort before his burial at Arlington National Cemetery, said Amber Vincent, a cemetery spokeswoman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis has kind of been an unsolved mystery and it gives us closure to finally know what happened to Bert, where he is and that he\u2019s being finally laid to rest after being listed as an unknown for so long,\u201d said Brad McDonald, a nephew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service at Arlington was the latest chapter in the story of the man from the small northern Illinois town of Grayslake, for the family that never had a body to bury when he was killed and the scientific quest to put names to the remains of hundreds of personnel from the battleship who lay buried anonymously for decades in a dormant volcanic crater near Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a story of waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22252635625141.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"This April 1938 photo shows the USS Oklahoma.\" class=\"wp-image-81258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22252635625141.jpg.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22252635625141.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22252635625141.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22252635625141.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,682 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22252635625141.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">FILE &#8211; This April 1938 photo shows the USS Oklahoma. (AP\/File)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battleship remained submerged for two years before it was refloated and bodies were recovered. A few years later, the graves of men on the Oklahoma were reopened in the hopes that dental records might lead to their names. But 27 sets of remains were not identified and had to be reinterred at the crater, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, commonly known as the Punchbowl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another effort to identify about 100 sets of remains came up empty in 2003.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2015\/06\/17\/exhumation-begins-for-unidentified-remains-from-uss-oklahoma\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Department of Defense announced plans to exhume the remains again<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe now have the ability to forensically test these remains and produce the identifications,\u201d Debra Prince Zinni, a forensic anthropologist and laboratory manager at the Defense POW\/MIA Accounting Agency in Hawaii, told The Associated Press at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gave new hope to Jacobson family members, who had been disappointed by each failed effort. They told the AP that Jacobson\u2019s mother cried every Dec. 7, at least in part because she never knew where he was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe always had the hope the phone would ring and it would be Bert,\u201d McDonald said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/12\/07\/survivors-gather-to-remember-those-lost-at-pearl-harbor\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Floyd-Welch_Pearl-Harbor.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Survivors gather to remember those lost at Pearl Harbor<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The number of Pearl Harbor attack survivors gets smaller every year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2015 effort,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/12\/03\/military-ids-100-killed-on-uss-oklahoma-in-pearl-harbor\/8\" target=\"_blank\">Project Oklahoma<\/a>, has led to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hi-state-wire-nebraska-business-831346c28aed726bf4b196869e7e4b5d\" target=\"_blank\">identification of 355 men<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 including Jacobson \u2014 who were killed when their ship was hit by at least nine torpedoes. That leaves 33 sets of remains still to be identified. To mark the 80th anniversary of the attack, those unidentified remains were reinterred, said Gene Hughes, a public affairs officer with Navy Personnel Command. He has worked with the families of those killed on the Oklahoma, including Jacobson\u2019s relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Jacobson\u2019s family, any hope they would know exactly what happened on Dec. 7, 1941, faded long ago. All they knew from talking to Jacobson\u2019s shipmates was that he had just come off duty after spending several hours ferrying men to shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonald said a good friend of his uncle from the Navy said he was pretty sure Jacobson \u201cwas asleep in his bunk and died before he even knew a war was going on. But we don\u2019t really know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That left one final question: What happened to Bert Jacobson\u2019s body?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer came in 2019, when McDonald said the family was notified that Jacobson\u2019s remains had been identified. Hoping the burial could take place the next year, they were forced to wait, in large part because the COVID-19 pandemic delayed most gatherings, funerals included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, they have gotten the closure that Jacobson\u2019s parents and other family members never had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wish they could have seen this,\u201d McDonald said of his grandparents, parents and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For him, seeing the funeral for the uncle he never met take his place at Arlington is especially significant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen Bert joined the Navy, he ran into a fella from South Dakota who was an orphan,\u201d McDonald said. \u201cWhen they got a weekend pass, Bert took him home and the orphan met his [Bert\u2019s] younger sister.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orville McDonald and Norma Jacobson dated and later married, giving McDonald a favorite ending to that story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat orphan was my dad, and Bert\u2019s sister was my mom,\u201d he said. \u201cSo, I
