Department officials said they reached 40,401 by Dec. 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are thousands of formerly homeless veterans who are going to sleep tonight in good, safe, stable homes \u2014 and there\u2019s nothing more important than that,\u201d McDonough said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is great progress, but it\u2019s just the beginning. We at VA will not rest until the phrase \u2018homeless veteran\u2019 is a thing of the past.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/11\/03\/the-number-of-homeless-vets-dropped-sharply-over-the-last-two-years\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP22305672447110.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The number of homeless vets dropped sharply over the last two years<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">But about 33,000 veterans were still without stable housing in the latest federal survey of individuals in distress.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, federal officials announced the number of homeless veterans across the country on any given night dropped sharply in recent years, from about 37,000 in January 2020 to around 33,000 in January 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The figures come from the annual Point-In-Time count held each January. They represent a snapshot of the current housing problem among veterans but not an exhaustive list of all individuals who will experience homelessness over the course of a year. The 2023 PIT count is taking place this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough joined a group of VA staffers and volunteers last night assisting in the rainy weather with Washington, D.C.\u2019s PIT count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s really important for us to come out to make sure that we\u2019re counting exactly what we see so we know what we\u2019re up against,\u201d he told Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2010 \u2014 when President Barack Obama announced a federal focus on ending veterans homelessness \u2014 the number of homeless veterans recorded in the annual count has dropped by more than 55% (from 76,329). However, from 2016 to 2020, improvement in the numbers was largely flat, falling only about 6% over the four-year span.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said lessons learned in last year\u2019s amplified outreach efforts will help them provide more housing services in years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the other things that we learned through this process was the importance of making sure that folks had access to the data that they needed,\u201d said Jill Albanese, director of business operations for VA\u2019s Homeless Programs Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe took some time to make sure that all of the medical centers and all of our community providers had access to really good data [on struggling veterans] and that it was useful to them. We also provided some very focused technical assistance, asking experts in the field to provide on-site services.
