{"id":73056,"date":"2022-04-07T19:09:57","date_gmt":"2022-04-07T19:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/04\/07\/the-defense-department-is-3d-printing-barracks\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:30:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:30:33","slug":"the-defense-department-is-3d-printing-barracks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/home\/2022\/04\/07\/the-defense-department-is-3d-printing-barracks\/","title":{"rendered":"The Defense Department is 3D printing barracks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the words of the great Ray Kinsella, \u201cIf you build it, he will come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Or, in the case of barracks, if you 3D print it, soldiers will be forced to live in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Partnering with ICON, a private construction technology company in Texas, the Defense Department is 3D-printing the largest structures in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/2989152\/dod-building-largest-3d-printed-structures-in-western-hemisphere\/\" target=\"_blank\">Western Hemisphere<\/a>, to serve as transient housing for service members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Made out of ICON\u2019s proprietary \u201cLavacrete,\u201d this printable high-strength concrete has a compressive strength of 2,000 to 3,500 pounds per square inch and can reportedly withstand extreme weather, and, presumably, the stupidity of Saturday night barracks shenanigans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The material is also supposed to be more long-lasting than traditional construction materials. Although it\u2019s unclear whether the material underwent tests involving the antics of drunk junior enlisted, it should withstand natural disasters and, hopefully, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/09\/14\/hurricane-florence-has-arrived-and-marines-aboard-embattled-camp-lejeune-have-decided-to-party\/\" target=\"_blank\">raucous parties<\/a> that go with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cConstructing facilities using this cutting-edge technology saves labor costs, reduces planning time, and increases the speed of construction of future facilities,\u201d Army Lt. Gen. Doug Gabram, commander of U.S. Army Installation Management Command said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the Army didn\u2019t say whether or not the barracks would come with the standard-issue asbestos, cockroaches and black mold or if those will grow there later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the 5,700 square foot structures will certainly be an engineering feat once completed in approximately 10 months, one can\u2019t help but wonder what comes next in the world of military 3D printing projects if this one is successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are looking at other ways to use this innovative technique for rapid construction of other types of facilities beyond barracks,\u201d Gabram added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One can only hope that the Defense Innovation Unit and Army Engineer Research and Development Center will turn their printing efforts toward better chow hall food \u2014
