Taranto\u2019s lawyer said the judge\u2019s decision will be appealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2023\/07\/07\/jan-6-rioter-arrested-near-obamas-home-is-navy-veteran\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"141\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-07-06-at-5.06.10-PM.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Jan. 6 rioter arrested near Obamas\u2019 home is Navy veteran<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Federal authorities arrested Taylor Taranto, an Iraq War veteran and Jan. 6 participant, near President Obama&#039;s house last Thursday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taranto was arrested June 29 after prosecutors say he showed up in Obama\u2019s neighborhood on the same day that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jan-6-obama-justice-department-capitol-mccarthy-27934bbd095111e7eb2bac5b5bb24e06\" target=\"_blank\">former President Donald Trump posted on his social media platform<\/a>&nbsp;what he claimed was Obama\u2019s home address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors detailed a litany of what they said were examples of Taranto\u2019s erratic behavior before his arrest, including threatening statements about House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., and claims on his YouTube livestream that he intended to blow up the National Institute of Standards and Technology in suburban Maryland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taranto, 37, is charged with misdemeanor offenses in the Capitol riot. Prosecutors say he joined the crush of people who broke into the building and he made his way to the entrance of the Speaker\u2019s Lobby outside the House chamber. Prosecutors have indicated they could bring additional charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In court papers urging Taranto\u2019s release from jail, his lawyer wrote that Taranto had a \u201cstable home in Washington state, a loving wife and family, and is connected to mental health services there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taranto, a Navy veteran experienced \u201csignificant trauma\u201d from serving in Iraq, public defender Kathryn Guevara told the judge. She said Taranto was driving a combat vehicle in a convoy that was hit by enemy missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe witnessed people perish and experienced and witnessed extreme carnage,\u201d Guevara said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The judge expressed sympathy for Taranto, saying he deserved to get more help coping with the toll of his military service, and praised him for seeking treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt every turn, it seems you get let down. And that\u2019s not fair,\u201d Faruqui said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taranto\u2019s lawyer said that her client was talking about tunnels near Obama\u2019s home \u201cin a joking manner\u201d because the subject has been fodder for conspiracy theories. She said in court papers that comments he made about getting the \u201cthe shot\u201d or \u201cangle\u201d while near Obama\u2019s house were only in reference to the livestream video he was taking at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guevara said in court that Taranto was attacked and injured on Tuesday by other inmates in the wing of the Washington jail where Jan. 6 defendants are detained while awaiting trial. She did not elaborate on the circumstances of the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors said that on the day he was arrested, Taranto reposted a Truth Social post from Trump containing what Trump claimed was Obama\u2019s home address. In a post on Telegram, Taranto wrote: \u201cWe got these losers surrounded! See you in hell, Podesta\u2019s and Obama\u2019s.\u201d That\u2019s a reference to John Podesta, the former chair of Hillary Clinton\u2019s 2016 Democratic presidential campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While livestreaming on YouTube in the neighborhood, Taranto told followers that he was looking for \u201centrance points,\u201d was going to find a way to the \u201ctunnels underneath their houses\u201d and wanted to get a \u201cgood angle on a shot,\u201d according to the detention memo. Officials said he was spotted by law enforcement a few blocks from Obama\u2019s home and fled, though he was chased by Secret Service officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors say Taranto\u2019s wife told investigators that he had come to Washington because of McCarthy\u2019s offer earlier this year to produce unseen video of the Jan. 6 attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, prosecutors said, Taranto has been active online, posting a Facebook video of him in the Capitol on the day of the riot and endorsing a conspiracy theory that the death of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/01\/07\/woman-shot-and-killed-at-capitol-was-security-forces-airman-qanon-adherent\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ashli Babbitt<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 who was fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer as she began to climb through the broken part of a door leading into the Speaker\u2019s Lobby \u2014 was a hoax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FBI had been monitoring Taranto\u2019s online activities because of his involvement in the riot. The bureau stepped up efforts to find him after he asserted on his YouTube livestream on June 28 that he was in Gaithersburg, Maryland, on a \u201cone-way mission\u201d and intended to blow up his van at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the livestream, he also made \u201cominous comments\u201d about McCarthy, saying: \u201cComing at you McCarthy. Can\u2019t stop what\u2019s coming.
