{"id":73604,"date":"2022-10-09T17:08:52","date_gmt":"2022-10-09T17:08:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/10\/09\/big-changes-in-your-savings-plan-have-taken-effect\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:12:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:12:16","slug":"big-changes-in-your-savings-plan-have-taken-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/mil-money\/2022\/10\/09\/big-changes-in-your-savings-plan-have-taken-effect\/","title":{"rendered":"Big changes in your savings plan have taken effect"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent changes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/mil-money\/2018\/07\/10\/benefits-basics-whats-a-tsp\/\" target=\"_blank\">Thrift Savings Plan<\/a> give savers more investment options, more electronic tools and easier access to their accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what you need to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the traditional TSP funds, there\u2019s a new mutual fund window that offers thousands of mutual fund choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there are costs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$55 annual fee<\/li><li>$95 annual maintenance fee<\/li><li>$28.75 fee per trade<\/li><li>Any additional fees and expenses that the individual mutual fund may have.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That adds up to at least $179 a year, if you make just one trade a year. These fees apply just to the new mutual fund window and are being imposed to avoid indirectly increasing costs for TSP participants who don\u2019t use the mutual fund window, according to the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board, which administers the plan. The costs for TSP funds have traditionally been lower than most other investment programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/mil-money\/2022\/10\/07\/this-coast-guardsman-became-a-millionaire-with-his-thrift-savings-plan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/bank-_-money.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This Coast Guardsman became a millionaire with his Thrift Savings Plan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">This military TSP millionaire said his parents encouraged him to start saving part of his salary early, and it&#039;s paid off for him.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you choose to invest through the mutual fund window, your initial investment must be at least $10,000, and you can\u2019t invest more than 25% of your total account in the mutual fund window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means you must have at least $40,000 in your TSP account. That may be at the nine or 10 year mark of service for enlisted members who are contributing 5%; and for officers, maybe at year six, according to JJ Montanaro, a certified financial planner who is relationship director on the Military Affairs team at USAA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe higher expense ratios of the mutual funds can be off-putting, but if that\u2019s what you\u2019re trying to do, and as long as you do it the smart way, then I don\u2019t think those expenses are prohibitive,\u201d Montanaro said. \u201cThe stated goal is that providing this option isn\u2019t going to increase the cost for the rest of the folks in the TSP.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s always the option to invest in mutual funds elsewhere, in an IRA, for example, or outside a retirement account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other changes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>There\u2019s a new TSP mobile app available for download in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store,<\/li><li>Participants can use features such as electronic signatures; receiving payments through direct deposit to your bank account or by check.<\/li><li>There\u2019s access to a virtual assistant through the website or on the mobile app.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investors must remember that the thousands of mutual funds available haven\u2019t been vetted by the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board, said Gerri Walsh, president of the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. She suggest investors use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finra.org\/investors\/tools-and-calculators\/using-finra-fund-analyzer\">FINRA\u2019s fund analyzer<\/a>, a tool that provides information about the fund, its objectives and the costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can see the impact a higher expense ratio will have on the value of your account if you\u2019re considering similar mutual funds,\u201d she said. \u201cFees add up. None of us can control what happens in the market, and we can\u2019t control the performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut we can control our costs. So if you are investing through the mutual fund window, you will set up separate accounts through TSP, and then you\u2019ll have those choices available. And to help you determine which choices are right for you, you might consider using the fund analyzer tool.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tool is available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finra.org\/investors\/tools-and-calculators\/using-finra-fund-analyzer\" target=\"_blank\">FINRA<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For detailed information about
