But on a gut level, I know we owe vets and their families a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newmark, who stepped down as CEO of his namesake web site more than 20 years ago, has spent most of the last eight years <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/tags\/craig-newmark-fellow-bob-woodruff-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\">focused on charity work<\/a>, launching the <a href=\"https:\/\/craignewmarkphilanthropies.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Craig Newmark Philanthropies<\/a> to distribute some of his personal wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest $100 million pledge is actually a continuation of recent efforts focused on military groups. About $42 million of the money has already been given away, including $10 million each to <a href=\"https:\/\/bluestarfam.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Star Families<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bobwoodrufffoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bob Woodruff Foundation<\/a>. The rest of the money will be awarded over the next three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2020\/02\/26\/military-families-crave-stability-and-more-time-together-survey-finds\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Navy-family-reunion-6112887.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Military families crave stability and more time together, survey finds<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Financial issues, relocation stress are top stressors of active duty and spouses.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In announcing \u201ca big number,\u201d as Newmark deemed it during a sit-down with Military Times, he hopes to spur not only new research and outreach among established military supporters but also to draw public attention to those efforts, some of which have fallen out of the public eye since the end of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard to ask someone to do their best to serve their country if they\u2019re worried about their family back home or if they\u2019re worried that they may be abandoned as a vet,\u201d he said. \u201cSo people in industry, and also one-percenters everywhere, probably could pony up some cash to help out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newmark\u2019s foundation said the money will be directed towards \u201ccontributing to solutions for the most pressing challenges facing veterans and military families,\u201d a list that includes mental health problems, food insecurity, employment challenges and loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beneficiaries of the donations say the money provides unexpected opportunities for growth and outreach. Blue Star Families, for example, will see their operating budget almost double thanks to the new money. You have to grow incrementally. But with a big infusion like this, you can leap to the next level, and that is exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Newmark has an emeritus seat on Blue Star Families\u2019 board of directors, but describes his role as mostly listening and \u201cgetting out of the way\u201d while advocates work towards solutions. He believes most Americans support helping military members and their families, but don\u2019t know what that means or how to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to learn what we already know: that we owe vets and their families,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019ve done the job we asked, they\u2019ve made great sacrifices. It feels right to do something about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Information on how groups can apply for the new grants are available through <\/i><a
