{"id":74601,"date":"2023-02-13T18:22:01","date_gmt":"2023-02-13T18:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/02\/13\/civil-war-artillery-shell-discovered-at-gettysburg\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:48:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:48:11","slug":"civil-war-artillery-shell-discovered-at-gettysburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/02\/13\/civil-war-artillery-shell-discovered-at-gettysburg\/","title":{"rendered":"Civil War artillery shell discovered at Gettysburg"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An unexploded artillery shell was discovered at Gettysburg National Military Park on Feb. 8, host to one of the bloodiest but most decisive battles of the Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explosive Ordnance Disposal soldiers with the Army\u2019s 55th Ordnance Company safely removed and destroyed the device, determined to be a 3-inch Burton case shot, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/263881\/army_eod_technicians_destroy_unexploded_round_discovered_on_gettysburg_battlefield#:~:text=Booker%2C%20the%20commander%20of%20the,in%201863%2C%E2%80%9D%20said%20Booker.\" target=\"_blank\">according to an official statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis type of munition was historically used during the Civil War and most likely came from the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863,\u201d Capt. Matthew D. Booker, commander of the 55th Ordnance Company, noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2022\/11\/10\/national-park-service-awards-grants-to-restore-civil-war-battlefields\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6713457.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">National Park Service awards grants to restore Civil War battlefields<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The grants restore \u201cday-of-battle\u201d conditions at battlefields and historic sites associated with the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steven Brann, a contract archeologist, found the artillery shell while doing a ground sweep of the Little Round Top area, which is under renovation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/09\/us\/civil-war-shell-gettysburg-pennsylvania\/index.html?utm_medium=social&#038;utm_source=twCNN&#038;utm_content=2023-02-10T01%3A15%3A03&#038;utm_term=link\">CNN reported<\/a>. The hill saw some of the most intense action between Union and Confederate troops during the three-day 1863 conflict, which ended in a Union victory and marked a key turning point in the Civil War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After traveling from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, the soldiers carried the 10-pound shell to an alternate location, dug a hole, and placed it there along with C4 explosives to blow it up, Jason Martz, a spokesman for the military park, told CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re never going to know whether the thing was live or not,\u201d Martz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/history\/2023\/02\/09\/artillery-gettysburg-unexploded-battlefield\/?utm_campaign=wp_main&#038;utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social\">told the Washington Post<\/a>. \u201cAnd we\u2019re never going to know how that shell got to the point where we found it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2023\/01\/12\/jeff-daniels-real-life-gettysburg-connection\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1035172252.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018Gettysburg\u2019 star Jeff Daniels unearths ancestral connection to battle<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The actor, who won acclaim for his role as Joshua Chamberlain in &quot;Gettysburg,&quot; found a personal connection to the event in PBS&#039; &#039;Finding Your Roots.&#039;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though rare, this is not the first time unexploded munitions were recovered from Gettysburg. In August 2022, a 3-inch Hotchkiss shell was found lodged in a historic building being refurbished, the Army statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Antique munitions from various conflicts are still being found across the United States and the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/193830963988089\/posts\/4815020675202405\/?app=fbl\" target=\"_blank\">archeologists found<\/a> a 10-pound Civil War shell at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Georgia. In December 2022, five construction workers were hospitalized after being exposed to a gas released from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/USAGarrisonStuttgart\/posts\/pfbid02xYemqGiCodWf2iqybPEXjh3qTHPwSv2noP9bq3EBiArjFNek49QuJibAS6jesKmhl\" target=\"_blank\">striking a World War II-era phosphorous
