{"id":75103,"date":"2023-08-24T17:20:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-24T17:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/08\/24\/thousands-of-vets-disability-claims-delayed-years-because-of-glitch\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:19:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:19:23","slug":"thousands-of-vets-disability-claims-delayed-years-because-of-glitch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2023\/08\/24\/thousands-of-vets-disability-claims-delayed-years-because-of-glitch\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands of vets\u2019 disability claims delayed years because of glitch"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 32,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/02\/17\/va-benefits-nominee-promises-more-free-help-for-veterans-filing-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\">veterans\u2019 disability claims<\/a> were delayed \u2014 some as long as five years \u2014 due to a technical flaw in federal filing systems, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/08\/15\/surge-in-covid-cases-sparks-worries-among-va-leaders\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs officials<\/a> acknowledged this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The total represents only a small fraction of the more than<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/03\/23\/va-claims-backlog-improves-but-still-sits-far-above-pre-pandemic-levels\/\" target=\"_blank\"> 7 million claims filed<\/a> since the start of 2018, but has left some individuals waiting for years for answers on cases that are only just now being processed. Leaders called the problem an embarrassing oversight and have promised that veterans will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/01\/23\/supreme-court-rejects-bid-to-ease-retroactive-benefits-rules-for-vets\/\" target=\"_blank\">awarded back pay<\/a> once their files are handled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have identified all of the veterans who were impacted by this issue, started processing their claims, and begun notifying them of this delay via mail,\u201d VA officials said in a statement. \u201cWe are processing these claims with the utmost urgency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe deeply apologize to these veterans for the delay, and we will ensure they receive the benefits they\u2019ve earned as quickly as possible. We will also continue to review our technology, processes, and systems to prevent such technical issues from impacting veterans in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delayed claims \u2014 first discovered by staffers in February, but only recently resolved \u2014<b> <\/b>are the latest technology misstep for a department already under intense scrutiny from lawmakers and advocates for ongoing challenges with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/04\/21\/va-halts-all-new-work-on-health-records-overhaul\/\" target=\"_blank\">new electronic health records system<\/a>, a 10-year, $16-billion project that has been repeatedly stalled because of software problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/04\/21\/va-halts-all-new-work-on-health-records-overhaul\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1148600572.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA halts all new work on health records overhaul<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Several sites were scheduled to begin using the new software later this year, but department leaders have now completely scrapped that timeline.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this situation, the 32,000 delayed disability compensation claims filed through online systems were not properly routed to processing staffers, leaving the cases untouched. Department officials said the problems began as early as 2018 but could not give the average wait time for each veteran or give a breakdown of when the delayed cases were submitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA staffers blamed the switch from \u201clegacy claims processing systems\u201d to the <a href=\"http:\/\/va.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA.gov<\/a> portal for the error. They said the problems have now been resolved so that other cases are not similarly lost in the department\u2019s systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department leaders could not say how many of the claims affected were first-time submissions versus supplemental filings looking to increase existing disability payouts. The disability claims support can range from a few hundred dollars a month to more than $4,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If veterans whose claims were filed in 2018 fall into the latter category, they could receive more than $240,000 in back pay, under current VA rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans affairs officials said all of the approximately 32,000 delayed claims \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2023\/08\/23\/32000-veterans-have-va-disability-claims-decisions-delayed-technical-glitch.html\" target=\"_blank\">first reported by Military.com<\/a> \u2013 are now being processed, but no time frame has been given for when they may be completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department already has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefits.va.gov\/REPORTS\/detailed_claims_data.asp\" target=\"_blank\">backlog of about 274,000 first-time disability cases<\/a> pending for more than four months. That number was as low as 70,000 before the start of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in America.
