{"id":75119,"date":"2023-09-25T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-25T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/09\/25\/va-officials-sound-alarm-on-uptick-in-veterans-benefits-scams\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:54:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:54:58","slug":"va-officials-sound-alarm-on-uptick-in-veterans-benefits-scams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2023\/09\/25\/va-officials-sound-alarm-on-uptick-in-veterans-benefits-scams\/","title":{"rendered":"VA officials sound alarm on uptick in veterans benefits scams"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/09\/22\/va-to-recoup-nearly-10-million-in-mistaken-bonuses-to-senior-staffers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs officials<\/a> this weekend launched a new effort to combat fraud tied to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/09\/21\/total-of-overdue-va-disability-claims-balloons-to-almost-300000\/\" target=\"_blank\">department benefits<\/a>, in response to fears that the rapid expansion of assistance in the last year could invite more scammers to prey on vulnerable veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work includes a new online page \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.va.gov\/vsafe\" target=\"_blank\">www.va.gov\/vsafe<\/a> \u2014 outlining how veterans can spot scams, report suspicious actors and get benefits assistance for free. Department leaders said the information will also be woven into veterans\u2019 regular health care visits and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/02\/17\/va-benefits-nominee-promises-more-free-help-for-veterans-filing-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\">interactions with benefits processors<\/a>, to frequently emphasize the resources available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re getting this into the hands of our regional office directors, we\u2019re getting this into the hands of our medical center teams, so they can be talking to veterans in very plain language about this,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/11\/14\/va-secretary-makes-promise-we-will-be-vets-best-advocates\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Secretary Denis McDonough<\/a> said in a press conference with reporters on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far this fiscal year, VA has investigated nearly 12,500 cases of potential benefits fraud and provided support to 1,164 victims of benefits scams. Some of that caseload is linked to the new military toxic exposure benefits legislation signed into law in August 2022, which for the first time provides financial compensation for a host of illnesses linked to war zone burn pit smoke inhalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/09\/21\/total-of-overdue-va-disability-claims-balloons-to-almost-300000\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VA.jpg_37e9e2.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Total of overdue VA disability claims balloons to almost 300,000<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The number of overdue cases hasn&#039;t been that high since 2014.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAny time there\u2019s new benefits or new money that\u2019s been allocated to individuals, there\u2019s an opportunity for fraudsters and scamsters to come in,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/transition-tips\/transition\/2019\/06\/07\/this-dod-program-gives-transitioning-service-members-247-access-to-mental-health-help\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maureen Elias<\/a>, VA Deputy Chief of Staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we are seeing is a large increase in unaccredited service reps who are charging veterans to file their initial claim, which is not legal. They\u2019re operating in a gray area, and some of them are charging up to six times whatever a veteran receives in benefits payouts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elias, an Army veteran and a military spouse, recounted for reporters how her family was cheated out of thousands by a scammer who confused her with promises to use her veterans benefits to help pay off her home loans. She said one of the reasons she was susceptible was because she didn\u2019t know how to check whether what the company was promising matched up with VA rules and regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo now, we want to oversaturate veterans with fraud and scam information, so that they know how to recognize it and what to do when it comes to them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McDonough has been warning veterans of the potential for predatory claims companies during recent speeches before veterans groups, and said part of the outreach effort on the issue will include partnering with those organizations to direct veterans to proper channels for questions regarding their benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans and survivors have filed nearly 2.3 million disability claims so far in fiscal 2023, the most ever in department
