{"id":75160,"date":"2023-01-05T19:36:33","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T19:36:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/01\/05\/would-new-washington-commanders-mascot-major-tuddy-pass-a-tape-test\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:46:13","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:46:13","slug":"would-new-washington-commanders-mascot-major-tuddy-pass-a-tape-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2023\/01\/05\/would-new-washington-commanders-mascot-major-tuddy-pass-a-tape-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Would new Washington Commanders mascot \u2018Major Tuddy\u2019 pass a tape test?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Washington Commanders franchise just can\u2019t get out of its own way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the naming of its new mascot, the team\u2019s leadership has shown once again just how much it appears to hate its fans and just how little it seems to understand the U.S. military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a half-empty stadium on Sunday, the once-proud franchise unveiled its newly minted, militarized hog mascot bearing the name \u201cMajor Tuddy,\u201d another step in the off-beat military theme selected when the name \u201cCommanders\u201d was chosen to represent the rich military history of the D.C. area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, \u201cTuddy,\u201d a slang term for \u201cTD\u201d or \u201ctouchdown,\u201d appears to be an extremely aspirational \u2014 if not completely ill-fitting \u2014 name for Washington, which, throughout the entirety of the team\u2019s season, has scored very few of them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The selection of the pig, meanwhile, is a historic nod to the team\u2019s glory days of the 1980s and early \u201890s, when Washington\u2019s punishing offensive line under head coach Joe Gibbs and offensive line coach Joe Bugel were known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.the-hogs.net\/blogs\/the-hogs\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Hogs.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mascot\u2019s moniker, however, may pose a legal issue for the team, as a handful of Hog alumni, including famed running back John Riggins, have suggested the Commanders franchise is improperly using their brand name. There were even initial reports that some of the players were<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JPFinlayNBCS\/status\/1607444329974358016?s=20&#038;t=1f_MyOTtMT-c9gJN1uWPtg\" target=\"_blank\"> filing a lawsuit against owner Dan Snyder<\/a> in the hope of reclaiming trademarking rights and \u201ctheir rightful ownership\u201d of the Hogs name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet, it gets worse. The \u201cMajor Tuddy\u201d costume and his official biography are also exercises in absurdity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1752\" height=\"1020\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-01-02-at-12.03.33-PM.png.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-107692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-01-02-at-12.03.33-PM.png.png 1752w, \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMajor Tuddy is a muscular 6\u20325 230-pound male hog with exaggerated features,\u201d the fact sheet says. \u201cKey elements of Major Tuddy\u2019s personality include being a prankster, a mud roll, the life of the party, a protector and a foodie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also loves Mambo Sauce wings and go-go music, because D.C., of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we didn\u2019t know any better, we\u2019d say that Tuddy is, in fact, not a commissioned officer but a member of
