Linda Fagan, Air Force Gen. Jacqueline Van Ovost, Army Gen. Laura Richardson and Navy Adm. Lisa Franchetti \u2014 gathered at the Military Women\u2019s Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/3320600\/women-leaders-discuss-benefits-of-military-service\/\" target=\"_blank\">the conversation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen all of [them] \u2026 signed up to serve their country, there were barriers in their way. Certain aircraft they couldn\u2019t fly, certain ships they couldn\u2019t be on, certain jobs that they were not allowed to have,\u201d said Norah O\u2019Donnell, evening anchor of CBS News, who moderated the talk between the four women. All were promoted to general or admiral in their respective services within the last two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2023\/01\/26\/experts-data-point-to-women-as-best-military-recruiting-pool\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/636022118472640521-women-at-boot-campjpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Experts, data point to women as best military recruiting pool<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Women are still in in the vast minority in the military, but experts say they are an important recruiting pool.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group of women leaders reflected on their personal careers, noting how they do not always enjoy the weight of being a \u201cfirst,\u201d and emphasized the need to recruit and retain talented women so the services can move beyond breaking glass ceilings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt has truly been a journey,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscg.mil\/Biographies\/Display\/Article\/3048180\/admiral-linda-l-fagan\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fagan,<\/a> who assumed the role of commandant in June 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Leadership\/Flag-Officer-Biographies\/BioDisplay\/Article\/3148210\/admiral-lisa-franchetti\/\" target=\"_blank\">Franchetti<\/a>, who became the Vice Chief of Naval Operations in September 2022, said that similar to Fagan, she was not welcomed aboard her first ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know that when I came into the Navy in 1985, a lot of the doors for women were closed,\u201d she said. \u201cI think the question for women today is no longer \u2018What can I do?\u2019 It\u2019s \u2018What do I want to do?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other milestones, all women were allowed to serve as members of the military in peacetime beginning in 1948, and in 2013, the Pentagon lifted the official ban on female service members in combat roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, there were nearly 232,000 women service members comprising 17.3% of the active-duty force, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Releases\/Release\/Article\/3246268\/department-of-defense-releases-annual-demographics-report-upward-trend-in-numbe\/#:~:text=In%202021%2C%20women%20made%20up,of%20the%20Guard%20and%20reserve.\" target=\"_blank\">Defense Department figures<\/a> released in December. At 171,000 members, women also made up 21.4% of the National Guard and reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the 75 years since we\u2019ve had the opportunity to serve, we certainly have come a long way,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.af.mil\/About-Us\/Biographies\/Display\/Article\/108814\/jacqueline-d-van-ovost\/\" target=\"_blank\">Van Ovost,<\/a> who has led U.S. Transportation Command since October 2021. \u201cOur progress has been accelerating, but we have a way to go still and we\u2019re working on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the challenges women in the armed forces still face include access to child care, specialized female equipment and uniforms, and having their voices recognized, even when they do have a seat at the table, the four-stars added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another issue highlighted was the continued need to address a culture in which women deal with discrimination and sexual abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll of the services have been on a journey around sexual harassment, sexual assault, bullying,\u201d Fagan said. \u201cAnd I consider where we are today versus where we were eight or 10 years ago &#8230; a much better position.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In celebration of
