For me, it was the loss of a teenage boy I worked with to manage his Type 1 diabetes \u2014 the same disease I struggled to manage as a teen \u2014 not to his medical condition but to gang violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That tragedy made me realize health care must go beyond diagnosing and treating a disease. A healthcare professional must understand and care for all the factors of a patient\u2019s life \u2014 socio-economic status, race, prior trauma, environmental exposures, veteran status, and more \u2014 to effectively care for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/\">Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a>, we teach more than 118,000 health professional trainees annually how to treat the whole patient \u2014 not just the symptoms in front of them, but the struggles the patient might be going through that impact their health. That integrative approach is what I learned when I trained at the Boston VA Medical Center, and what drew me to return to the VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, roughly 70% of all doctors in the U.S. trained at VA facilities, and with the veteran population currently at 19.5 million, and more veterans eligible for VA health care through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/resources\/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits\/\">PACT Act<\/a>, we need more health professionals who are trained to meet their unique clinical needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nationally, VA is the largest training platform for health professions education through partnerships with 96% of U.S. medical schools, including my alma mater, Harvard Medical School. Trainees learn to understand the patient as a whole \u2014 their goals, dreams, and challenges \u2014 and provide them with the right treatment, resources, and approach to their care. It\u2019s through their clinical training working with veteran patients that trainees often experience their own pivotal moments \u2014 their why \u2014 that shape them as health care professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA training is packed with technical clinical skills \u2014 like those taught by VA surgeon Angela Guzzetta, MD, medical simulation surgical director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utsouthwestern.edu\/education\/medical-school\/\">University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine<\/a>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SzfVxU9TGcM\">trains residents in robotic surgery<\/a> at the Dallas VA. But it is VA\u2019s interprofessional training that sets us apart. VA trains students and residents in over 60 health professions including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbm.va.gov\/education\/VAPharmacyResidencyProgram.asp\">pharmacy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/oaa\/nursing.asp\">nursing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/oaa\/medical-and-dental.asp\">general and specialized medicine<\/a> at over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/health\/\">150 of VA\u2019s medical centers<\/a> in a learning environment that values each team member\u2019s expertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take, for instance, Minneapolis VA Physiatrist Alex Senk, MD. As a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician resident interested in sports medicine at <a href=\"https:\/\/twin-cities.umn.edu\/health-sciences\">University of Minnesota<\/a>, he completed training at the Minneapolis VA spinal cord injury unit. There, he developed his passion for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=h-aTWbJCY28&#038;list=PL3AQ_JVoBEyxrXublU5_oyvG-nC-pIgHH&#038;index=6&#038;t=15s\">adaptive sports<\/a>. He now teaches physiatry residents to incorporate adaptive sports to inspire severely injured veterans to achieve their goals. He\u2019s even become a dive buddy for disabled veterans like Seth Thomas, a paraplegic who now is deep-water scuba dive-certified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clinicians like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TUX0vjeHcFY&#038;list=PL3AQ_JVoBEyxrXublU5_oyvG-nC-pIgHH&#038;index=14\">Orlando VA Nephrologist Abdo Asmar, MD<\/a>, teach how to provide culturally competent care \u2014 care that meets the social, cultural and linguistic needs of patients. His trainees are residents at University of Central Florida School of Medicine, one of the more than 285 Minority Serving Institutions that partner with VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA also remains at the forefront of teaching and championing accreditation for emerging health care disciplines while focusing on Veteran-specific needs. Training programs in specialties that are now integral to the health care landscape include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.va.gov\/\">psychology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/GERIATRICS\/index.asp?utm_source=geriatrics_left_menu\">geriatric medicine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/oaa\/nursingprograms\/nursing-programs.asp\">nurse practitioner<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialwork.va.gov\/\">social work<\/a>. VA also is leading the way in accredited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=z8crg9RVJis&#038;list=PL3AQ_JVoBEyxrXublU5_oyvG-nC-pIgHH&#038;index=10\">chiropractic residencies<\/a> like the one Nate Hinkeldey, DC, established at the Des Moines VA that is advancing chiropractic medicine as part of the interdisciplinary health team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are just a few of the outstanding medical professionals who trained \u2014 and now teach \u2014 at VA. And we need more like them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA is on its way to achieving its goal of hiring 52,000 additional employees including physicians, nurses and other clinical occupations this fiscal year, keeping with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/03\/29\/vet-agency-chief-calls-onboarding-times-for-new-hires-indefensible\/\">Secretary Denis McDonough\u2019s commitment to bring new medical staff onboard faster<\/a> and more efficiently. In fact, VA has onboarded nearly 23,000 new hires \u2014 a 2.5% growth rate \u2014 since the start of this fiscal year, the most in the history of VA for that time period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I invite medical professionals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/oaa\/careers.asp\">current and recent VA trainees<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/vacareers.va.gov\/\">join VA<\/a> in our mission to serve veterans.
