{"id":75646,"date":"2023-11-08T15:14:04","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T15:14:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/11\/08\/psychedelics-may-soon-be-available-sort-of-to-treat-vets-with-ptsd\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:07:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:07:45","slug":"psychedelics-may-soon-be-available-sort-of-to-treat-vets-with-ptsd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/11\/08\/psychedelics-may-soon-be-available-sort-of-to-treat-vets-with-ptsd\/","title":{"rendered":"Psychedelics may soon be available \u2014 sort of \u2014 to treat vets with PTSD"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juliana Mercer went to Costa Rica, not for fruity drinks or white sand beaches, but for the psilocybin, more commonly known as magic mushrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 15-year Marine Corps veteran, who served stints in both Iraq and Afghanistan, had found herself in what she called a \u201cblack hole\u201d \u2014 a place with no purpose \u2014 after returning home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She got in contact with a non-profit that connects vets with psychedelic therapies, traveling to the Central American country, where more treatments were legal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer, now the veterans advocacy director for veteran support group Healing Breakthrough, advocates for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2017\/08\/30\/floatin-in-ecstasy-veterans-suffering-from-ptsd-may-soon-find-help-in-an-unlikely-source\/\" target=\"_blank\">the use of MDMA<\/a> and other psychedelic assisted therapies for veterans suffering from a range of mental health problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce I had my own experience and my own healing, that was seemingly overnight, I began to advocate to be able to connect veterans to these therapies,\u201d Mercer told Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While MDMA is more commonly known as ecstasy or molly, there are major chemical differences between street psychedelics and the varieties used in treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Psychedelics are considered entheogens, which produce an altered perception of reality when consumed. This is the traditional chemical reaction experienced by users taking it as a party drug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, the MDMA therapies that groups like Healing Breakthrough pursue are entactogens. That type of chemical property leads to \u201cprofound states of introspection and personal reflection\u201d and \u201caffiliative social behavior,\u201d according to an article in <i>Frontiers of Psychiatry<\/i> by medical chemist David Nichols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers have already received promising initial results. In 2017, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2019\/03\/11\/lsd-and-magic-mushrooms-can-enhance-cognitive-capabilities-help-win-wars-study-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration<\/a> designated MDMA as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/05\/09\/psychedelic-drug-provides-relief-for-veterans-with-ptsd\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cbreakthrough therapy\u201d<\/a> for treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. Psilocybin to treat anxiety and depression received that designation in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS, has researched the effects of MDMA for more than 30 years. It was tasked with conducting further studies on the treatment, the most recent of which was a multi-site clinical trial and the second phase III trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second trial confirmed the results of the first phase III trial. More than 86% of participants who received the MDMA-assisted therapy experienced \u201cclinically meaningful\u201d improvement 18 weeks after starting the trial, according to MAPS. Greater than 71% of participants who had MDMA-assisted therapy also no longer met the diagnostic criteria for PTSD at the end study, compared to little more than 46% of participants who had the placebo plus therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1300\" height=\"688\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Rachel.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Rachel.jpg.jpg 1300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Rachel.jpg.jpg?resize=300,159 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Rachel.jpg.jpg?resize=768,406 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Rachel.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,542 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1300px) 100vw, 1300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr. Michael C. Mitheofer, a psychiatrist, and his wife, Ann, a nurse, talk with patient, Rachel Hope, during a treatment session (photo courtesy of MAPS).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cParticipants in the MDMA-assisted therapy group experienced a significant reduction in PTSD symptoms versus participants receiving placebo,\u201d according to MAPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The psychedelic therapies allow entactogens to put patients in a better introspective and reflective mindset to process PTSD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey open doors and allow us a window of opportunity to really do the work to process the different feelings and thoughts that come up during that psychedelic experience,\u201d said Ilse Weichers, deputy executive director of the VA office of mental health and suicide prevention, on the VA\u2019s podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/124415\/exploring-psychedelics-treatment-of-veterans\/\" target=\"_blank\">New Horizons in Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joshua Woolley, who leads the University of California-San Francisco translational psychedelic research program, said phase III trials of MDMA and psilocybin have shown \u201cvery promising results\u201d in treating PTSD, depression and substance abuse disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe effects are quite dramatic,\u201d Woolley said on the VA podcast. \u201cPTSD symptoms can go away for months or even years after one or a few treatments, so there\u2019s a lot of excitement about this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Woolley added that the studies are focused on \u201cideal conditions\u201d of candidates who suffer from exact medical issues and do not have other extenuating circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPsychedelic-assisted therapy consistently accelerates symptom improvement and leads to rapid and significant reduction in PTSD scores, often rendering the diagnosis unnecessary,\u201d Mark Seelig, a clinical psychotherapist and panelist on psychedelics at MCON, a November convention on military and veteran culture, told Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have no doubt that we are currently witnessing how safe and responsible use of psychedelics is ushering in a revolutionary era for psychiatry and psychotherapy,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercer expects the FDA to approve the treatment by next year, while psilocybin is four or five years behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The success of initial trials comes as a mental health crisis sweeps through veteran communities. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, one in 10 male veterans and nearly two in 10 female veterans suffer from PTSD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom suffer from near-epidemic levels of PTSD, as nearly 30% of those veterans say they have suffered from PTSD at some point in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suicide levels among veterans are higher than what the federal government once thought, too. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/17\/veterans-suicide-rate-may-be-double-federal-estimates-study-suggests\/\" target=\"_blank\">America\u2019s Warrior Partnership<\/a>, in partnership with the University of Alabama and Duke University, found thousands of suspected or confirmed veteran suicides in eight states from 2014 to 2018 that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/09\/17\/veterans-suicide-rate-may-be-double-federal-estimates-study-suggests\/\" target=\"_blank\">were not counted<\/a> by federal officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the study was replicated across other states, researchers believe that would increase the veteran suicide rate from 17 deaths a day \u2014 the VA\u2019s official estimate \u2014 to 44 deaths a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, there are seven trials taking place across the country through the VA. But the problem, Mercer said, is that each study is philanthropically funded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no federal support, no federal funding on this treatment that has the potential to fix the veterans suicide epidemic and the PTSD problem,\u201d Mercer said. \u201cSo we\u2019re educating our lawmakers, telling them that we need to support the VA financially so that they can figure out how to basically roll out MDMA-assisted therapy as soon as it\u2019s FDA-approved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers, in response to the trend, are now pushing for more MDMA therapy research throughout the VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reps. Lou Correa, D-Calif., and Jack Bergman, R-Mich., recently submitted an amendment to the Veterans Affairs appropriations bill that would direct the department to set up pilot programs for breakthrough therapies, including MDMA, across the country. The pair co-chair the Psychedelics Advancing Therapies Caucus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s crucial that the VA do all it can to ensure that those who would benefit most from these potentially lifesaving therapies can get access to them \u2014 as soon as possible,\u201d Correa said in a statement. \u201cCongress has the power to fix this, and with this amendment, we\u2019ll push the VA to research the impact of breakthrough therapies, like psychedelics, that are already saving the lives of veterans in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis amendment will help steer the federal government towards doing more and providing better options to help our veterans overcome some of the hardest battles they will fight,\u201d Bergman added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The amendment \u2014 and greater VA appropriations bill \u2014 remains on an uncertain timeline. Legislative measures in the House of Representatives were stalled for three weeks when a handful of GOP representatives joined Democrats to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Now, lawmakers are trying to negotiate a budget for fiscal 2024 before a Nov. 17 deadline that would shutdown the government, the VA funding bill included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No matter the state of the amendment\u2019s final passage, Mercer sees MDMA therapies as a great hope for any veteran suffering from PTSD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s the big, bright light at the end of the tunnel for those of us that have been looking for solutions to the veteran suicide epidemic,\u201d Mercer said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s something that I think is going to not just save and heal a lot of veterans.
