{"id":75721,"date":"2023-03-17T14:15:00","date_gmt":"2023-03-17T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/03\/17\/polls-show-support-for-iraq-war-drop-in-20-years-post-invasion\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:25:37","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:25:37","slug":"polls-show-support-for-iraq-war-drop-in-20-years-post-invasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/03\/17\/polls-show-support-for-iraq-war-drop-in-20-years-post-invasion\/","title":{"rendered":"Polls show support for Iraq War drop in 20 years post invasion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the two decades after the United States invasion of Iraq began, public support for the drawn-out war dwindled, according to a series of surveys conducted by think tanks and research groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In stark contrast to the early stages of the conflict, today 36% of the public agrees the United States was right to invade Iraq in March 2003, with 31% believing it made America safer, according to an Axios\/Ipsos Two Americas Index poll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-us\/news-polls\/axios-ipsos-two-americas-index\" target=\"_blank\">conducted earlier this March<\/a>. In 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/1633\/iraq.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Gallup found<\/a> that just 16% of Americans had a mostly or very favorable rating of the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four years ago, 62% of Americans said the war was not worth fighting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2019\/07\/10\/majorities-of-u-s-veterans-public-say-the-wars-in-iraq-and-afghanistan-were-not-worth-fighting\/\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Pew Research Center.<\/a> A majority of military veterans, including those who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, came to the same conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2023\/03\/14\/a-look-back-at-how-fear-and-false-beliefs-bolstered-u-s-public-support-for-war-in-iraq\/\" target=\"_blank\">found in a review of its polls<\/a> from the last 20 years that American support for the use of force in Iraq was initially built on a series of falsehoods, including that the regime possessed \u201cweapons of mass destruction\u201d and had ties to terrorist groups like al-Qaida, which conducted the Sept. 11 attack. Over time, however, approval would plummet as doubts about Iraq\u2019s illicit behavior grew and the realities of the prolonged, violent war set in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/legacy-pdf\/148.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Pew survey conducted<\/a> a few weeks prior to President George W. Bush\u2019s 2002 State of the Union address found that 73% of Americans favored military action in Iraq; just 16% were opposed. More than half (56%) said the U.S. should take action against Iraq \u201ceven if it meant U.S. forces might suffer thousands of casualties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point, more than a year before the invasion began, Americans saw several justifications for taking military action. 83% said if the U.S. learned Iraq had aided the Sept. 11 terrorists, that would be a \u201cvery important reason\u201d to use military force there. Nearly as many said the same if it was shown that Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction (77%) or harboring other terrorists (75%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/legacy-pdf\/173.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">February 2003<\/a>, just a month before U.S. troops deployed to Iraq, a solid 66% majority of Americans favored the use of military force against the country if given backing from major allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the initial invasion, the fall of Baghdad in April 2003 and Bush\u2019s notorious \u201cMission Accomplished\u201d speech, public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/legacy-pdf\/195.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">support for the use of force in Iraq rose<\/a> to 74%, but would never again reach that level, according to the research center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By May 2004, more than a year into the conflict, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/legacy-pdf\/213.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">the Pew Research Center noted<\/a> the share of Americans who said the use of military force was going at least \u201cfairly well\u201d fell below 50% for the first time. With growing partisan polarization over the conflict, Bush\u2019s strategy to send additional forces to Iraq further divided the nation. Nearly two-thirds of all Americans opposed the plan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/legacy-pdf\/301.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a 2007 survey<\/a> from the research center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A month before the end of U.S. military operations in Iraq in December 2011, 75% of Americans \u2014 including nearly half of Republicans (48%) \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2011\/11\/17\/section-4-views-of-iraq\/\" target=\"_blank\">approved President Barack Obama\u2019s decision<\/a> to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from the country by the end of the year, with just 21% disapproving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although that year a majority of Americans (56%) said the U.S. mostly succeeded in achieving its goals in Iraq, that notion later faded, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/03\/19\/iraq-war-continues-to-divide-u-s-public-15-years-after-it-began\/\" target=\"_blank\">the research center
