{"id":75771,"date":"2023-06-04T14:43:05","date_gmt":"2023-06-04T14:43:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/06\/04\/military-colleges-chief-of-diversity-quits-amid-debate-over-dei\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:35:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:35:06","slug":"military-colleges-chief-of-diversity-quits-amid-debate-over-dei","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/06\/04\/military-colleges-chief-of-diversity-quits-amid-debate-over-dei\/","title":{"rendered":"Military college\u2019s chief of diversity quits amid debate over DEI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chief diversity officer of the nation\u2019s oldest state-supported military college, Virginia Military Institute, has turned in her resignation amid a debate among alumni over the school\u2019s diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jamica Love took on the new role in July 2021 \u2014 a month after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/va-state-wire-virginia-race-and-ethnicity-racial-injustice-8ac14df9807db60cdde2be4961940c06\" target=\"_blank\">a state-sanctioned report<\/a>&nbsp;found VMI failed to address institutional racism and sexism and must be held accountable for making changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love\u2019s resignation was announced Thursday by VMI\u2019s first Black superintendent, retired U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Cedric T. Wins, and was first reported by The Washington Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love, who is the only Black woman to report to VMI\u2019s superintendent, declined to comment in an email to The Associated Press Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shah Rahman, a 1997 VMI graduate, told the AP that Love was an asset to the school and that her leaving is \u201ca terrible thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love\u2019s hiring has been part of recent diversity efforts at the school, which was founded in Lexington in 1839 and carries the prestige of educating the likes of Gen. George Patton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VMI didn\u2019t accept African Americans until 1968 or accept women until after a 1996 U.S. Supreme Court ruling. Almost quarter of the school\u2019s cadets are now people of color, while 14% are women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report released in 2021 said \u201cracial slurs and jokes are not uncommon\u201d at VMI and contributed \u201cto an atmosphere of hostility toward minorities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlthough VMI has no explicitly racist or sexist policies that it enforces, the facts reflect an overall racist and sexist culture,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent diversity efforts have included&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2020\/12\/07\/virginia-military-institute-removes-statue-of-confederate-gen-stonewall-jackson\/\" target=\"_blank\">the removal of a prominent statue<\/a>&nbsp;of Confederate Gen. Stonewall Jackson, who taught at VMI, as well as the implementation of diversity training sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some in the alumni community have called the efforts \u201cwoke\u201d or on par with \u201ccritical race theory.\u201d But others have said they are crucial for training cadets for the real world and are aligned with the U.S. military\u2019s goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The school\u2019s Office of Diversity, Opportunity and Inclusion will continue to exist despite Love\u2019s departure, VMI\u2019s spokesman Bill Wyatt said in an email Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Superintendent Wins is \u201cstill committed to preparing cadets for the world,\u201d Wyatt said. \u201cThis includes preparing them to be leaders of a diverse military or civilian workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the efforts have been criticized by some alumni, particularly by a political action committee called The Spirt of VMI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A March blog post on its site said diversity, equity and inclusion efforts sow \u201cdivision, destruction and discord\u201d and are designed \u201cto cow Americans into agreeing with the fundamental premise that white people are inherently and irredeemably racist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matt Daniel, a 1985 graduate who helped form the group, told The Associated Press Friday that VMI\u2019s diversity training for cadets initially \u201cpromoted racial division and victimhood.\u201d Daniel said the training became less divisive earlier this year and began to focus more on social problems that cadets may encounter in the military or in the business world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This spring, VMI changed the name of the office that Love ran from Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to Diversity, Opportunity, and Inclusion to match the title of Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin\u2019s diversity office in Richmond, The Washington Post reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Youngkin\u2019s chief diversity officer, Martin Brown, also visited VMI\u2019s campus in April to lead mandatory staff and faculty training, during which Brown said \u201cDEI is dead,\u201d the Post reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rahman, the 1997 VMI graduate, worries the school could become out of synch with the U.S. military if it strays from its diversity goals. VMI has said over the years that it\u2019s one of the highest producers of minority commissioned officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Department of Defense, from everything I\u2019ve been observing, is 100% committed to DEI,\u201d Rahman said. \u201cAnd day by day, it looks like VMI is going in the other
