{"id":76347,"date":"2023-08-14T14:51:21","date_gmt":"2023-08-14T14:51:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/08\/14\/just-hours-left-for-vets-to-apply-for-retroactive-pact-act-benefits\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:56:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:56:52","slug":"just-hours-left-for-vets-to-apply-for-retroactive-pact-act-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2023\/08\/14\/just-hours-left-for-vets-to-apply-for-retroactive-pact-act-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Just hours left for vets to apply for retroactive PACT Act benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans who may have contracted serious illnesses from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/03\/29\/what-are-military-burn-pits-and-why-are-veterans-worried-about-them\/\" target=\"_blank\">burn pit smoke<\/a> and other military toxic exposure hazards have just a few hours left to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/resources\/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\">submit disability claims<\/a> and be eligible for up to a year of back payments, a windfall that could be more than $50,000 in some cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/08\/10\/important-pact-act-deadline-extended-amid-tech-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\"> original deadline<\/a> for the submissions was Aug. 9, but<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/08\/09\/officials-urge-vets-to-apply-for-pact-act-benefits-despite-tech-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\"> technical problems<\/a> with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/08\/03\/mobile-medical-units-to-be-deployed-across-us-to-aid-homeless-vets\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a> claims systems pushed that timeline back to this week. The benefits are being granted through the Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/12\/12\/va-starting-work-on-terminally-ill-vets-pact-act-claims-immediately\/\" target=\"_blank\">better known as the PACT Act <\/a>\u2014 which was signed into law one year ago this month. (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/resources\/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA link to file is here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans and survivors now have until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time today to file their claims or or submit an \u201cintent to file\u201d to be eligible to have their benefits backdated to August 2022. Individuals who miss that deadline can still file for monthly disability support, but if payouts are granted they will begin on the day of their filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legislation could impact as many as one in every five veterans living in America today. It includes expanded disability benefits for 12 types of cancer and 12 other respiratory illnesses linked to burn pit smoke exposure in the most recent wars, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/05\/14\/benefits-for-burn-pit-illnesses-hypertension-from-agent-orange-would-be-granted-under-new-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\">hypertension for veterans<\/a> who served in Vietnam and were exposed to the chemical defoliant Agent Orange.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2023\/08\/10\/important-pact-act-deadline-extended-amid-tech-issues\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP23214741610807.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Important PACT Act deadline extended amid tech issues<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Veterans Affairs extended the deadline for retroactive PACT Act payouts amid online technical difficulties.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans who are rated 100 percent disabled for injuries sustained during their military service can receive more than $4,000 a month in support from the VA, depending on their family status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs officials said as of last week, more than 450,000 claims have been granted under the PACT Act in the last year. But a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/08\/09\/officials-urge-vets-to-apply-for-pact-act-benefits-despite-tech-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\">rush of claims ahead of the Aug. 9 deadline caused technological errors within the department\u2019s system<\/a>, forcing the deadline extension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Aug. 10, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/02\/02\/new-house-vets-chair-plans-focus-on-pact-act-oversight-medical-access\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Mike Bost<\/a>, R-Ill., sent a letter to VA Secretary Denis McDonough expressing concerns about the computer problems, and asking for plans for future improvements by the end of the month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA\u2019s failure to anticipate and prepare for the increased volume of submissions as the PACT Act deadline approached is unacceptable, given that the situation was easily foreseeable as this law is the largest expansion of healthcare and benefits for veterans in recent history,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uhuiFLd9Tj0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen title=\"President Biden Delivers Remarks on the One Year Anniversary of the PACT Act\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At an event in Utah the same day, President Joe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2023\/08\/10\/remarks-by-president-biden-on-the-one-year-anniversary-of-the-pact-act-salt-lake-city-ut\/\" target=\"_blank\">Biden downplayed the deadline issues and praised the VA for doling out more than $1.85 billion in PACT Act benefits<\/a> in the last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA will move as quickly as possible to resolve your claim and get the benefits you deserve,\u201d he said in a speech to veterans and supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans or their family members can get information about PACT Act benefits by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/resources\/the-pact-act-and-your-va-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\">visiting the VA\u2019s website <\/a>or by calling 1-800-MYVA411 (1-800-698-2411). VA officials acknowledged long wait times on the hotline last week, but said they have worked to resolve those issues as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The original
