{"id":76496,"date":"2023-08-28T17:50:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-28T17:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/08\/28\/macdill-air-force-base-orders-evacuations-as-hurricane-idalia-nears\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:48:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:48:56","slug":"macdill-air-force-base-orders-evacuations-as-hurricane-idalia-nears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/08\/28\/macdill-air-force-base-orders-evacuations-as-hurricane-idalia-nears\/","title":{"rendered":"MacDill Air Force Base orders evacuations as Hurricane Idalia nears"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>This story has been updated at 4:10pm EDT with comment from U.S. SOCOM and the latest news from NOAA\u2019s National Weather Service<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The base commander at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/09\/29\/hurricane-ian-avoids-direct-hit-on-macdill-but-aims-for-jb-charleston\/\" target=\"_blank\">MacDill Air Force Base<\/a> in Tampa, Florida, has issued a mandatory<b> <\/b>evacuation of families and non-essential staff to be completed by Tuesday morning, as forecasters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/refresh\/graphics_at5+shtml\/175343.shtml?cone#contents\" target=\"_blank\">currently expect Idalia to make landfall early Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Col. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/09\/26\/macdill-air-force-base-issues-evacuation-with-hurricane-ian-looming\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adam Bingham<\/a>, MacDill\u2019s base commander, issued the installation-wide evacuation announcement on Monday for all \u201cnon-mission essential individuals and dependents\u201d in a statement. The National Hurricane Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/text\/refresh\/MIATCPAT5+shtml\/281149.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">expects Idalia to become a hurricane<\/a> later Monday<b> <\/b>\u2014 and turn into a \u201cdangerous major hurricane\u201d in the Gulf of Mexico by early Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are well rehearsed in this, being on the Florida coast,\u201d Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters Monday. \u201cThis is something that they train for and are prepared for to ensure continuity of operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military personnel and civilian employees at the base must receive approval to evacuate from their chain of command, according to the statement. The Limited Evacuation Order, meant to reimburse personnel for travel expenses during an evacuation, will be released in the near future, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MacDill is home to two combatant commands \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2023\/05\/02\/20-marines-deploy-to-central-command-to-provide-air-support\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Central Command<\/a> and U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/04\/30\/as-counterterror-missions-fade-special-operations-finds-time-to-fix-its-own-problems\/\" target=\"_blank\">Special Operations Command<\/a> \u2013 and more than two-dozen other military units including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/09\/29\/hurricane-ian-avoids-direct-hit-on-macdill-but-aims-for-jb-charleston\/\" target=\"_blank\">6th Air Refueling Wing<\/a>, which flies the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/09\/29\/hurricane-ian-avoids-direct-hit-on-macdill-but-aims-for-jb-charleston\/\" target=\"_blank\">KC-135 Stratotankers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur hazardous weather procedures continue to allow us to accomplish our mission, while ensuring the safety of our personnel and their families,\u201d the CENTCOM news desk emailed Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSOCOM is not going to minimum staffing,\u201d Lt. Col. Allie Weiskopf, a spokesperson from the command, emailed Military Times. \u201cPersonnel who live on base are being relocated inland, and SOCOM HQ essential personnel will be operating out of multiple contingency locations to ensure there is no degradation to our mission. We\u2019ll return when local \/ federal authorities say it\u2019s safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/09\/26\/macdill-air-force-base-issues-evacuation-with-hurricane-ian-looming\/\" target=\"_blank\">Category 4 Hurricane Ian forced MacDill to evacuate personnel<\/a>. Ian avoided a direct hit on the base, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2022\/09\/29\/hurricane-ian-avoids-direct-hit-on-macdill-but-aims-for-jb-charleston\/\" target=\"_blank\">13 people were killed<\/a> during the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the base evacuation, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced in a statement that the Florida National Guard is mobilizing 1,100 personnel to support anticipated areas of impact.<b> <\/b>A dozen aircraft and 2,400 high-wheel vehicles are
