{"id":76834,"date":"2024-06-18T18:03:19","date_gmt":"2024-06-18T18:03:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/06\/18\/coast-guard-station-head-fired-over-harassment-claim-inaction\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:19:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:19:00","slug":"coast-guard-station-head-fired-over-harassment-claim-inaction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2024\/06\/18\/coast-guard-station-head-fired-over-harassment-claim-inaction\/","title":{"rendered":"Coast Guard station head fired over harassment claim inaction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The commander of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/06\/10\/coast-guard-academy-official-resigns-before-sexual-assault-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coast Guard<\/a>\u2019s largest station was fired June 3 for failing to follow proper procedures in the wake of harassment accusations in the command, service officials announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coast Guard Station New York leader Cmdr. David Ruhlig was relieved after the service determined he \u201cfailed to take certain steps required by Coast Guard policy to address allegations of harassing behavior within the workplace,\u201d First District spokesperson Lt. Samantha Corcoran told Military Times in an email. \u201cThe Coast Guard takes all reports of harassment seriously and is committed to providing all members with a safe and respectful environment to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lt. Cmdr. Robert Garris, from the Coast Guard\u2019s Office of Boat Forces, will serve as the station\u2019s interim commanding officer until Lt. Cmdr. Craig Johnson assumes command of the station in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ruhlig, whose dismissal was officially listed by the service as resulting from \u201ca loss of confidence in his ability to fulfill the expectations of his position,\u201d was reassigned to Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, the service announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The firing follows a string of recent dismissals within Coast Guard leadership. In less than two months, the service fired four top leaders, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2024\/06\/14\/coast-guard-relieves-commander-of-biggest-station-failing-act-harassment-claims.html\" target=\"_blank\">a report from Military.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capt. Daniel Mode \u2014 a Catholic priest and service\u2019s top chaplain \u2014 was relieved of his command in April after allegations surfaced that he failed to act upon learning of another chaplain\u2019s sexual misconduct prior to joining the military, the report found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In May, Master Chief Petty Officer Timothy Beard was relieved of command for \u201cinappropriate misconduct,\u201d according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/military.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Military.com<\/a> report. Coast Guard chaplain Cmdr. Cristiano DeSousa was relieved of his duties that same month following an investigation that determined he showed poor judgment and breached the trust of service members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dismissal of Ruhlig comes as the Coast Guard grapples with a sexual assault and harassment controversy following the release of a long-hidden report detailing 43 credible accusations of sexual assault at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to the report, known as \u201cOperation Fouled Anchor,\u201d Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Linda Fagan in July 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/home\/2023\/12\/12\/lawmakers-coast-guard-academy-sex-assaults-threaten-national-security\/\" target=\"_blank\">announced a 90-day accountability and transparency review<\/a> for the Coast Guard\u2019s sexual assault and harassment policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fagan in December introduced 33 recommendations to address policy issues that would help stifle sexual assault in the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Government Accountability Office report found that by February 2024 the Coast Guard had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-24-107388\" target=\"_blank\">only completed five of the 33
