{"id":77093,"date":"2024-11-04T21:12:39","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T21:12:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/11\/04\/best-for-vets-hiring-veterans-on-the-other-side-of-the-world\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T16:09:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T16:09:45","slug":"best-for-vets-hiring-veterans-on-the-other-side-of-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/education-transition\/2024\/11\/04\/best-for-vets-hiring-veterans-on-the-other-side-of-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Best for Vets: Hiring veterans on the other side of the world"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recruiting <a href=\"https:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/rankings\/employers\/y2024\/\" target=\"_blank\">veterans and military family members to work<\/a> at Booz Allen Hamilton means reaching them wherever they are, even if they\u2019re living across an ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ve got transitioning vets and spouses that are in Stuttgart, Germany, or Okinawa, Japan, or any other place where the government puts them for their military time, and they\u2019ll transition from overseas and come back home to what?\u201d said Tom Downs, director of diversity talent acquisition and talent pipeline programs at Booz Allen Hamilton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, post pandemic, we still have a robust virtual program, so we can talk to every veteran, every spouse across the U.S. or the globe for that matter. \u2026 We can\u2019t hire every one of them, but we can make sure to at least have a conversation with them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/rankings\/employers\/y2024\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Best For Vets 2024 Employers<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That focus on attracting military talent is no small matter for the technology firm: About one-third of its annual hires are veterans, reservists or military dependents. Downs said the company has five recruiters dedicated solely to military recruitment, a reflection of the importance the population carries for the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aggressive hiring strategy \u2014 and a host of other military-centric employee programs \u2014 earned Booz Allen Hamilton the top spot on the <a href=\"https:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/rankings\/employers\/y2024\/\" target=\"_blank\">2024 Military Times Best for Vets Employers rankings<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company has been a regular among the top names in the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Best for Vets list <\/a>in past years, in large part because of its commitment to including veterans as core workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The survey weighs how organizations recruit, mentor and retain veterans and their family members. Hilary Niles, survey coordinator for the Best for Vets list, said the rankings don\u2019t just echo companies\u2019 raw staffing numbers, but also include factors such as \u201csupport programs, accommodations for military connected employees with disabilities, and opportunities for spouses and caregivers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/rankings\/employers\/y2024\/\" target=\"_blank\">This year\u2019s list<\/a> includes 238 employers spread across 44 states, with 62 firms making their debut in the rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It includes 33 defense contracting firms \u2014 traditionally seen as military-friendly and military-heavy companies \u2014 but also companies in fields less associated with hiring veterans, like health care, hospitality, energy and banking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top 10 includes representatives from nine different industries, with only pharmaceutical employers appearing twice (Johnson &amp; Johnson at #2, and Bristol Myers Squibb at #6).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3000\" height=\"2002\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP270590255089.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-108641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP270590255089.jpg.jpg 3000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP270590255089.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP270590255089.jpg.jpg?resize=768,513 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP270590255089.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP270590255089.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1025 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP270590255089.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1367 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3000px) 100vw, 3000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Veteran job seekers, recruits and military personnel listen during a Fort Bragg Veterans Jobs Summit. Davis\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Employee feedback<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comcast NBCUniversal, the #3 company on <a href=\"https:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/rankings\/employers\/y2024\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Best For Vets list<\/a>, earned its spot not just because of its veterans hiring patterns but also because of consistent communication with those employees throughout their careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several years ago, when veterans working there pitched the idea of a discount for military families on their cable services, officials at the company fast-tracked the proposal and sent notices to military bases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When another veteran at the media firm replaced a tattered American flag visible in his neighborhood with his own money, officials set aside thousands more to replace any aging flags that employees see in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe want to serve military customers, but we can\u2019t do that authentically if we don\u2019t have military-connected employees in our own workforce who can advise and guide us,\u201d said Mona Dexter, vice president of military and veteran affairs at the company. \u201cAnd seeing that response encourages our employees.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The flag program \u2014 dubbed Operation Old Glory \u2014 is less about directly helping veterans at the company and more about finding ways to link their patriotism and service to their post-military lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s that continued sense of service and connection to the symbol that represents the country,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a bit of education \u2014 not just for our employees, but for community members, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most companies near the <a href=\"https:\/\/bestforvets.militarytimes.com\/rankings\/employers\/y2024\/\" target=\"_blank\">top of the rankings<\/a> boast relationships with local veterans groups and military advocacy organizations to emphasize that community connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Booz Allen Hamilton\u2019s most successful partnerships is with the Defense Department, through their Skillbridge Program for transitioning troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative allows service members \u2014 and now, some military spouses \u2014 an opportunity for professional internships and apprenticeships at private-sector firms during their final six months in service. The goal is to give transitioning service members a chance to better understand the private sector and showcase their skills, with an eye towards a post-military career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Downs said Booz Allen Hamilton\u2019s involvement in the program has grown from around 20 participants five years ago to more than 150 this year. The firm boasts 11 different \u201cemployee communities\u201d to highlight the backgrounds of various groups, including one for military-connected individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey each have their own networking events, their own development programs,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd you can be a member in as many of the groups as you want. They do happy hours, they do fun runs. That\u2019s the kind of stuff that keeps people here, feeling connected to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also another tool for recruiting. Downs said when military-related recruits start with the company, they\u2019ve typically already communicated with other veterans at the firm, learning about available support networks and mentoring opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly two-thirds of the companies on this year\u2019s Best For Vets list said they have an active employee group focused on veterans or related community members, helping to sustain a military-friendly atmosphere at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About the same percentage said they have military-specific mentorship programs available to eligible employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dexter said officials at Comcast NBCUniversal have noticed their employee support groups increasingly working together on charity and networking projects, bringing their specific communities together in ways that build more camaraderie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNobody in the veteran employee resource group identifies only as a veteran,\u201d she said. \u201cEverybody can identify with multiple other communities, too. &#8230; So, by bringing the various groups together, it just
