{"id":77389,"date":"2025-01-27T15:48:10","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T15:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/01\/27\/va-dod-oversight-questioned-after-trump-inspector-general-firings\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:49:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:49:36","slug":"va-dod-oversight-questioned-after-trump-inspector-general-firings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/01\/27\/va-dod-oversight-questioned-after-trump-inspector-general-firings\/","title":{"rendered":"VA, DOD oversight questioned after Trump inspector general firings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/01\/22\/trumps-federal-hiring-freeze-raises-fears-about-va-medical-care\/\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a> Friday night firing of 17 inspectors general \u2014 including the top watchdogs for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/03\/04\/pentagon-inspector-general-to-assess-navys-suicide-prevention-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\">departments of Defense<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2015\/10\/05\/obama-nominates-new-veterans-affairs-inspector-general\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Affairs<\/a> \u2014 has left the future work of the offices uncertain and outside advocates fearing a lack of accountability at key government agencies in months to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ignet.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/files\/CIGIE%20Statement%20--%201_25_2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency<\/a> have questioned the legality of the moves, given that Congress has mandated 30 days notice before the dismissal of any inspector general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIGs are not immune from removal,\u201d council chairman Hannibal Ware said in a statement over the weekend. \u201cHowever, the law must be followed to protect independent government oversight for America.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2024\/09\/30\/va-leaders-in-new-york-accused-of-delaying-critical-medical-visits\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6303632330_5075ffa915_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA leaders in New York accused of delaying critical medical visits<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In one case, a veteran with esophageal cancer had radiation therapy incorrectly denied for several months before dying from the illness.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group promised legal challenges to the moves. But in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/01\/27\/politics\/video\/inspector-general-fired-trump-mark-greenblatt-digvid\" target=\"_blank\">CNN interview on Monday morning<\/a>, Department of the Interior Inspector General Mark Greenblatt said all access to his office is being blocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy email has been cut off and I don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen with my things,\u201d he said. \u201cI was there for five and a half years. And so, we\u2019ll see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump defended the actions over the weekend, telling reporters flying with him on Air Force One Saturday that it was his prerogative to put new personnel in place to help enact administration priorities. He claimed the move was \u201ca very common thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of Congress disagreed. Several noted that <a href=\"https:\/\/department.va.gov\/staff-biographies\/michael-j-missal\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Inspector General Mike Missal<\/a> had served in the post since 2016, working as a watchdog for three different administrations. Under his leadership, the office released numerous reports critical of VA officials during Trump\u2019s first administration and former President Joe Biden\u2019s term in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPresident Trump is gearing up to install an Inspector General at VA who will lack independence and will wield the authority of the position to retaliate against the president\u2019s perceived political opponents, or to conceal any wrongdoing that may implicate Trump and his allies over the next four years,\u201d House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee ranking member Mark Takano, D-Calf., said in a statement. \u201cThese actions will directly harm veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee ranking member Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., echoed that sentiment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPurging the VA\u2019s Inspector General puts veterans at risk of a surge in corruption and abuse of power,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cThe Inspector General is the most important internal watchdog that protects veterans from waste and wrongdoing. Firing him and eliminating his independent oversight is a betrayal of trust as well as violation of law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/01\/21\/va-secretary-nominee-promises-more-medical-care-options-and-upgrades\/\" target=\"_blank\">former Rep. Doug Collins\u2019 confirmation hearing<\/a> last week to serve as the next VA Secretary, Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee Chairman Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, praised the Inspector General\u2019s office as important to department operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe work closely with the inspector general at VA,\u201d he said. \u201cI find him valuable both to me and to this committee, and he should be valuable to the Department of Veterans Affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A group of 21 Democratic lawmakers on Saturday wrote a letter demanding a reversal of the firings, saying the move is \u201cantithetical to good government, undermines the proper stewardship of taxpayer dollars, and degrades the federal government\u2019s ability to function effectively and efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Department Inspector General\u2019s Office was without a Senate-confirmed leader from 2016 to 2022, the entirety of Trump\u2019s first term in office. That had been a point of contention among lawmakers who said office oversight was not as strong under acting officials, and lacked the independence mandated for the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dodig.mil\/Biographies\/Bio-Display\/Article\/3239269\/the-honorable-robert-p-storch\/\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Storch<\/a> was confirmed as the permanent defense inspector general in December 2022, and held the post until last week\u2019s firings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From April to October last year, Storch\u2019s office released 68 oversight reports, which included 325 recommendations for improvement across the military services. They included examinations of U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, efforts to boost U.S. military power in the Indo-Pacific region, and recommendations on acquisition improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VA Inspector General\u2019s office released 180 reports and memos over that same period, and assisted in 137 arrests related to veterans benefits fraud and abuse. That work also resulted in more than 500 administrative actions against VA workers found to be abusing or misusing their posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from both offices did not respond to requests about the impact the firings would have on current and future investigations.
