{"id":78240,"date":"2025-03-17T19:42:41","date_gmt":"2025-03-17T19:42:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/03\/17\/dod-commits-98-million-to-study-psychedelics-for-active-duty-troops\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:53:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:53:43","slug":"dod-commits-98-million-to-study-psychedelics-for-active-duty-troops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/03\/17\/dod-commits-98-million-to-study-psychedelics-for-active-duty-troops\/","title":{"rendered":"DOD commits $9.8 million to study psychedelics for active-duty troops"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center confirmed they will receive one of two $4.9 million grants from the Department of Defense to fund a study of MDMA, the active ingredient in the street drug known as ecstasy, according to emails shared with Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The psychedelic drug will be given to active-duty Army personnel with mild to moderate post-traumatic stress disorder to study the psychological flexibility patients experience as a potential mechanism of MDMA\u2019s therapeutic effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second grant, provided as part of the 2024 Defense Appropriations Act, will fund a separate MDMA-assisted therapy study done in partnership between Emory University and STRONG STAR, a medical consortium and training network based in the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the U.S. government first conducted illegal experiments with psychedelics on soldiers half a century ago, this new study marks the first-ever trial of MDMA for the treatment of PTSD in active-duty soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maj. Aaron Wolfgang, the head of Inpatient Psychiatry at Walter Reed who specializes in treating PTSD, will be the lead author and physician of the double-blind placebo trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wolfgang is the first author in a systematic review and overview of MDMA and MDMA-assisted therapy featured in the <a href=\"https:\/\/psychiatryonline.org\/doi\/10.1176\/appi.ajp.20230681\" target=\"_blank\">January issue of the <i>American Journal of Psychiatry<\/i><\/a>. The article, written by a cohort of leading psychedelic researchers, describes common misconceptions about MDMA due to its close association with classical psychedelics like LSD, psilocybin and mescaline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnlike other psychedelics,\u201d the paper says, \u201cMDMA uniquely induces prosocial subjective effects of heightened trust and self-compassion while maintaining ego functioning as well as cognitive and perceptual lucidity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2024\/12\/03\/va-awards-15-million-to-study-using-psychedelics-for-ptsd-treatment\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP23172764571526.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA awards $1.5 million to study using psychedelics for PTSD treatment<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The move is the first time Veterans Affairs leaders have funded a study into psychedelic benefits since the 1960s.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This apparent gain of function suggests what advocates for the legalization of MDMA have been saying for decades: the drug is uniquely positioned to be a breakthrough therapeutic for PTSD and other depressive disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new study expects to enroll 91 active-duty service members not anticipated for redeployment. Each participant will receive three MDMA dosing sessions between three and five weeks apart over the course of 10 months. Participants would receive three preparatory sessions before the first dosing session and three integration sessions after each dosing session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnlike other MDMA-Assisted Therapy\/Psychedelic Assisted Therapy long-term studies, this will be one of the first that I\u2019m aware of to incorporate long-term follow-up that remains double-blinded, which will provide us with higher confidence data,\u201d Wolfgang said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pharmaceutical company Lykos Therapeutics, formerly MAPS PBC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/02\/13\/psychedelic-to-receive-fast-track-review-as-possible-ptsd-drug\/\" target=\"_blank\">made a major push in December 2023 for MDMA to receive FDA approval<\/a>. When approval was denied in August 2024, the result came as a shock to advocates for psychedelic-assisted therapy, many of whom were veterans and their family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2024\/08\/09\/fda-rejects-psychedelic-mdma-as-treatment-for-ptsd\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Psychedelic-Therapy_07104.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">FDA rejects psychedelic MDMA as treatment for PTSD<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">MDMA research has been widely publicized by combat veterans, who say limited PTSD treatment options have contributed to higher military suicide rates.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think that PTSD should be treated while you\u2019re in service, not force you to decide to stay in or get out in order to receive the care you need,\u201d said Jonathan Lubecky, a veteran who served with the Marine Corps\u2019 Bravo Battery, 5th Battalion, 113th Field Artillery Regiment and deployed to Iraq with the Army in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last June, Lubecky provided testimony at an FDA public hearing, where he credited MDMA-assisted therapy, which he underwent in 2014, with allowing him to \u201ctruly live\u201d for the last decade and weather many of life\u2019s traumatic experiences long after returning from his deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wolfgang believes the military will have more success in elevating the legitimacy of MDMA-assisted therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The history of MDMA and the military runs deep. Col. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/01\/30\/magazine\/dr-ecstasy.html\">Leo Zeff<\/a>, a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, how to use MDMA to treat his therapy patients. Zeff was deeply impressed by the psychedelic and came out of retirement to evangelize MDMA\u2019s therapeutic benefits. In a 2005 New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/01\/30\/magazine\/dr-ecstasy.html\" target=\"_blank\">article<\/a> Shulgin\u2019s widow, Ann, recalled a speaker at Zeff\u2019s memorial service saying that the retired Army officer had introduced the drug to \u201cabout 4,000\u2033 therapists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shulgin, a Navy veteran who served on the Clemson-class destroyer Pope during World War II, went on to synthesize several unique psychedelics, including 2-CB, often described as a combination of MDMA and LSD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wolfgang hopes a new generation of soldiers could benefit from the drug\u2019s consideration as a breakthrough therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI also envision this project \u2014 and the lasting program I hope to see it turn into \u2014 as a beacon of hope for countless service members and their families who are suffering and whose lives are being upended due to PTSD,\u201d Wolfgang said. \u201c[They] already sacrifice so much in service to our country. I\u2019d like for them to know that we hear them and to know that we are working tirelessly to ensure we offer them the absolute cutting
