{"id":78330,"date":"2025-02-01T18:03:05","date_gmt":"2025-02-01T18:03:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/02\/01\/us-conducts-airstrikes-against-islamic-state-operatives-in-somalia\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:50:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:50:21","slug":"us-conducts-airstrikes-against-islamic-state-operatives-in-somalia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/02\/01\/us-conducts-airstrikes-against-islamic-state-operatives-in-somalia\/","title":{"rendered":"US conducts airstrikes against Islamic State operatives in Somalia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. military has conducted coordinated airstrikes against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/12\/09\/us-strikes-75-isis-targets-in-syria-after-assad-regime-collapses\/\" target=\"_blank\">Islamic State<\/a> operatives in Somalia, the first attacks in the African nation during President Donald Trump\u2019s second term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Saturday that the strikes by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/12\/11\/how-the-us-is-countering-isis-during-syrias-upheaval\/\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Africa Command<\/a> were directed by Trump and coordinated with Somalia\u2019s government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An initial assessment by the Pentagon indicated that \u201cmultiple\u201d operatives were killed. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/01\/09\/us-troops-need-to-stay-in-syria-to-counter-isis-pentagon-chief-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pentagon<\/a> said is assesses no civilians were harmed in the strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump, in a post on social media, said a senior IS planner and recruits were targeted in the operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe strikes destroyed the caves they live in, and killed many terrorists without, in any way, harming civilians. Our Military has targeted this ISIS Attack Planner for years, but Biden and his cronies wouldn\u2019t act quickly enough to get the job done. I did!\u201d Trump said. \u201cThe message to ISIS and all others who would attack Americans is that \u2018WE WILL FIND YOU, AND WE WILL KILL YOU!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump did not identify the IS planner or say whether that person was killed in the strike. White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. military officials have warned that IS cells have received increasing direction from the group\u2019s leadership that relocated to northern Somalia. That has included how to kidnap Westerners for ransom, how to learn better military tactics, how to hide from drones and how to building their own small quadcopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A U.S. military airstrike in Somalia last May targeted IS militants and killed three, according to U.S. Africa Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of IS militants in the country are estimated to be in the hundreds, mostly scattered in the Cal Miskaat mountains in Puntland\u2019s Bari region, according to the International Crisis
