{"id":78756,"date":"2024-01-12T20:55:17","date_gmt":"2024-01-12T20:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/01\/12\/nonprofit-scores-military-a-three-out-of-10-for-extremism-prevention\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:14:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:14:46","slug":"nonprofit-scores-military-a-three-out-of-10-for-extremism-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/flashpoints\/2024\/01\/12\/nonprofit-scores-military-a-three-out-of-10-for-extremism-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"Nonprofit scores military a three out of 10 for extremism prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. government has not done enough to prevent extremism in the Armed Forces in the three years since the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, one nonprofit claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Western States Center, which touts civic engagement and has been pushing back on extremist groups for the past several years, scored the military\u2019s efforts a three on a 10-point scale \u2014 one being most insufficient \u2014 in a scorecard published this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/6127dea2925e45475fcbfca9\/t\/65984f65fb01120f64eef02b\/1704480619596\/J6+Scorecard.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">scorecard rated the government\u2019s efforts to address what the nonprofit claimed were the six biggest threats to U.S. democracy<\/a>, one of which was to root out white nationalism within the military and among federal law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Western States Center included extremism in the military as one of the six threats because of the status service members hold in society and their ability to further anti-democracy movements if they become involved with them, said Freddy Cruz, a researcher with the nonprofit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are anti-democracy organizations that view the military as an opportunity,\u201d Cruz told Military Times. \u201cSome of the groups encourage members to join for the sake of getting military training, and extremists view them as avenues to legitimize their organizations and their activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nonprofit described the military\u2019s efforts since Jan. 6 as \u201clackluster\u201d and argued that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/extremism-disinformation\/2023\/11\/30\/extremism-stand-down-checked-a-box-with-no-lasting-result-critics-say\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pentagon\u2019s trainings about extremism were mostly symbolic<\/a>. The group pointed to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/extremism-disinformation\/2023\/12\/01\/problems-persist-with-how-services-report-extremism-dod-watchdog-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">report from December that found the Defense Department investigated 183 allegations of extremist activity among service members<\/a> in 2023, including 78 cases of troops advocating for the overthrow of the U.S. government. The findings, which came from the Pentagon\u2019s Office of Inspector General, revealed that the DOD investigated 37 more cases of extremism in 2023 than in 2022, which was the first year the IG issued a report on the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new report published between Christmas and New Year\u2019s also prompted concern from the Western States Center about the lack of progress the Pentagon was making. In the report, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/extremism-disinformation\/2024\/01\/05\/troops-do-not-have-an-extremism-problem-but-veterans-do-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Institute for Defense Analyses said the Pentagon\u2019s policies about extremism were creating confusion among service members<\/a>. The report also shed light on problems with the Pentagon\u2019s process for reporting incidents of extremist activities. Those issues had already been pointed out in earlier reports by other groups, Cruz said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt referred back to recommendations that had also been offered by civil society groups,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s not necessarily anything that is new.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its scorecard, Western States Center criticized Congress for approving a measure at the end of 2023 that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/extremism-disinformation\/2023\/12\/09\/the-pentagon-working-group-to-combat-extremism-could-be-finished\/\" target=\"_blank\">abolished a Defense Department working group aimed at preventing extremism<\/a> in the military. The nonprofit worries that the shutdown means any problems with extremism in the military will go unaddressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extremism in the Armed Forces is a longstanding issue that has grown in urgency since the Jan. 6, 2021, attack, the scorecard claims. According to data from the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.start.umd.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/local_attachments\/Extremism%20In%20the%20Ranks%20and%20After%20-%20Research%20Brief%20-%20August%202023%20Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> 193 individuals with military backgrounds had been charged or convicted for their roles in the breach of the Capitol<\/a> as of September 2023. That accounts for about 17.5% of all defendants charged in the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the vast majority of those individuals, about 90%, were no longer serving in the military at the time of the attack. Only 20 were active-duty service members or members of the National Guard or Reserve. Many of the individuals with military backgrounds who faced charges had been separated from military service for more than a decade, according to the the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the Pentagon has a role to play in preventing extremism among veterans, too, the Western States Center said. The nonprofit recommended that the Defense Department work with the Department of Veterans Affairs to implement programs that could support service members in their transition to civilian life and help them find meaningful community engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to extremism in the military, the Western States Center scored the government on five other issues that threaten U.S. democracy. The nonprofit gave the government a score of three for its efforts to support local democratic institutions\u2019 resistance to anti-democracy assaults. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The highest score was a six, which was given for the government\u2019s work to enforce consequences for people who threaten democracy. Western States Center applauded the Department of Justice\u2019s work to charge over 1,000 people in the Jan. 6 attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government\u2019s efforts to protect elections scored a five on the nonprofit\u2019s scale. The Western States Center claimed that elected officials and community leaders could do much more to create boundaries against bigotry and political violence. Those efforts scored a two out of 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lowest score was a one, which went to the government\u2019s work to protect individuals and communities from bigoted and anti-democratic threats and harassment. The nonprofit highlighted an increase in threats against poll workers, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/congress-swatting-incidents-holiday-week\/\" target=\"_blank\">recent incidents of lawmakers being swatted<\/a>, which occurs when someone deceives police or other emergency teams to respond to another person\u2019s address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen threats to election workers, to elected representatives and representatives getting swatted,\u201d Cruz said. \u201cThis all snowballs and feeds into a larger challenge against democratic institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>This story was produced in partnership with <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvj.network\/\"><i>Military Veterans in Journalism<\/i><\/a><i>.
