Several hundred have returned to the United States in recent weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military officials said that Islamic State leader <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/1948736581809926442\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CENTCOM\/status\/1948736581809926442\">Dhiya\u2019 Zawba Muslih al-Hardani<\/a> and his ISIS-affiliated sons \u201cposed a threat to U.S. and Coalition Forces, as well as the new Syrian Government.\u201d No information was released on how many personnel were involved in the strike or what equipment was used. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2025\/04\/18\/us-to-reduce-military-footprint-in-syria-to-fewer-than-1000-troops\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6403544.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US to reduce military footprint in Syria to fewer than 1,000 troops<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The departure would return force levels to where they had been for years, after the U.S. and its allies waged a multiyear campaign to defeat ISIS.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will continue to relentlessly pursue ISIS terrorists wherever they operate,\u201d Gen. Michael Kurilla, head of U.S. Central Command, said in a statement. \u201cISIS terrorists are not safe where they sleep, where they operate, and where they hide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlongside our partners and allies, U.S. Central Command is committed to the enduring defeat of ISIS terrorists that threaten the region, our allies, and our homeland.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military officials said that three women and three children were also nearby the ISIS fighters when the strike occurred, but none of them were harmed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">American military forces have been providing training and support to regional fighters for the last decade as they continue to battle remnants of the Islamic State group. That work came despite U.S. opposition to the government of former dictator Bashar al-Assad, who was toppled in December. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier on Friday, Syria\u2019s Foreign Ministry released a statement said they had met with American and French officials on efforts to \u201creinforce our cooperation on the shared fight against terrorism in all forms, and
