For both of them, it looked like the world was on fire. And it was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were just two of the 67,000 American soldiers and Marines to witness the aftermath of the atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, there are fewer than a handful of \u201catomic veterans\u201d still living, and the memories of the subsequent historic and horrifying days following the dropping of the bombs will soon be forever lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two friends, however, Karin Tanabe and Victoria Kelly, are working to make the surviving voices heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their documentary \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/atomic-echoes-untold-stories-from-world-war-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/atomic-echoes-untold-stories-from-world-war-ii\/\">Atomic Echoes<\/a>\u201d follows the pair and their disparate stories that lead back to August 1945. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tanabe recounted that her father\u2019s first memory is running into the ocean at 2 years old to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historynet.com\/firebombing-tokyo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.historynet.com\/firebombing-tokyo\/\">escape the American firebombing campaign against Tokyo<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her great-great-uncle, Tatsuo Morito, became the first post-war president of Hiroshima University. His mission, according to Tanabe, was \u201cpeace through education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is with that message that \u201cAtomic Echoes\u201d goes forth, showcasing survivors on both sides of the Pacific \u2014 the \u201chibakusha,\u201d the estimated 650,000 Japanese survivors of the bombings, and the \u201catomic veterans\u201d who responded in the immediate aftermath of the bombings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As \u201cAtomic Echoes\u201d highlights, the ramifications regarding the actions on Aug. 6, 1945, and Aug. 9, 1945, are still an ongoing process, even 80 years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"8192\" height=\"5464\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Atomic-Echoes_05.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-110160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Atomic-Echoes_05.jpg.jpg 8192w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Atomic-Echoes_05.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Atomic-Echoes_05.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Atomic-Echoes_05.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Atomic-Echoes_05.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1025 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Atomic-Echoes_05.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1366 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 8192px) 100vw, 8192px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Veteran Michas Ohnstad served with the 1st Cavalry Division in August of 1945. (Chris Janjic for Blue Chalk Media)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWar is hell,\u201d Ohnstad states in the documentary as he wipes tears from his eyes. \u201cAnd I can\u2019t improve on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Tanabe, Kelly\u2019s links to the war are personal as well. Her grandfather, Carmine Gerardi, entered Nagasaki 45 days after the second atomic bomb exploded over the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy grandfather died when my mom was 13, and she said he never talked about the war. He did, however, very clearly have PTSD, which they didn\u2019t really recognize back then,\u201d Kelly told Military Times in a recent interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey used to live in Brooklyn, and he couldn\u2019t handle the crowds on the subway. When my mom was, I believe it was six or seven, she actually remembers him coming home from the subway after trying to get to work and turning to my grandma and said, \u2018I can\u2019t do it.\u2019 So they bought a house in rural New Jersey.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The film does not focus on the question of \u201cwhat if\u201d or whether the U.S. should have dropped the bomb, rather it highlights the lasting effects of the weapon on the men, women and children who were on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[Ohnstad] had the most trauma because he was with the group of doctors doing all the autopsies of the people who died in Japan,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cHe probably witnessed hundreds, if not more, autopsies, and examined the survivors. Her doctor, renowned physician <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nobelpeaceprize.org\/nukes-how-to-counter-the-threat\/masao-tomonaga-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nobelpeaceprize.org\/nukes-how-to-counter-the-threat\/masao-tomonaga-1\">Masao Tomonaga<\/a>, recounted in the film that she told him, \u201cI have long been thinking in my body, [the] atomic bomb is hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evidence of Tatsuo\u2019s mantra, peace through education, is clearly at play throughout \u201cAtomic Echoes,\u201d a fact Kelly readily acknowledges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne of our big messages as we talk about the film is that there really isn\u2019t enough education around the human stories behind the bomb,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEverybody, when they think of the bomb, they think of the mushroom cloud. A lot of people have heard of the stories about the pilots who dropped it, but within the educational system there\u2019s not a lot of emphasis. So that was one of the really important things with the film \u2014 we wanted to show images of survivors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/show\/atomic-echoes-untold-stories-from-world-war-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\"
