{"id":79819,"date":"2025-08-11T19:46:59","date_gmt":"2025-08-11T19:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2025\/08\/11\/chinese-research-ships-in-us-arctic-draw-coast-guard-response\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:03:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:03:53","slug":"chinese-research-ships-in-us-arctic-draw-coast-guard-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/08\/11\/chinese-research-ships-in-us-arctic-draw-coast-guard-response\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese research ships in US Arctic draw Coast Guard response"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Coast Guard responded last week to two Chinese research vessels that entered U.S. Arctic territory, amid what Coast Guard officials called \u201cincreased activity\u201d by such ships in the region in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard deployed a C-130J Hercules aircraft from Air Station Kodiak in response to two Chinese research vessels, Ji Di and Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di, transiting the Bering Sea on Aug. 5, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.uscg.mil\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4270057\/us-coast-guard-responds-to-increased-chinese-research-vessel-activity-in-us-arc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news.uscg.mil\/Press-Releases\/Article\/4270057\/us-coast-guard-responds-to-increased-chinese-research-vessel-activity-in-us-arc\/\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following day, on Aug. 6, the cutter Waesche responded to the Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di as it maneuvered above the Arctic Circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. Coast Guard\u2019s responses are intended to counter malign activities, defend sovereign interests, and promote maritime conduct consistent with international law and norms,\u201d the Coast Guard said in the release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard said it is currently monitoring five similar Chinese vessels in and around the U.S. Arctic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe presence of these vessels is consistent with a three-year trend of increased activity from Chinese research vessels operating in the U.S. Arctic,\u201d the Coast Guard said in the release. \u201cLast year, three Chinese research vessels conducted research operations north of the Bering Strait.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joint military drills by China and Russia in the region in recent years have also prompted concerns from U.S. officials. In the summer of 2023, Chinese and Russian military forces conducted joint training exercises in the Bering Strait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis kind of increasing levels of military cooperation is new. Certainly, it\u2019s new within and around Alaska,\u201d Iris A. Ferguson, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Arctic and Global Resilience, said last December at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/2024\/12\/07\/china-russia-cooperation-poses-rising-threat-in-arctic-pentagon-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/2024\/12\/07\/china-russia-cooperation-poses-rising-threat-in-arctic-pentagon-warns\/\">Center for Strategic and International Studies<\/a> event. \u201cJust this past summer, right after we released our department [Arctic] strategy, we saw a joint bomber patrol off of the coast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increased Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic has also drawn concerns from international allies. Earlier this month, NATO deployed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2025\/08\/01\/nato-sends-warships-to-patrol-arctic-waters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2025\/08\/01\/nato-sends-warships-to-patrol-arctic-waters\/\">maritime task group<\/a> made up of Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese and German vessels to patrol Arctic waters, while Denmark recently purchased a number of U.S.-made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2025\/07\/23\/denmark-buys-four-sky-guardian-drones-for-arctic-surveillance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/global\/europe\/2025\/07\/23\/denmark-buys-four-sky-guardian-drones-for-arctic-surveillance\/\">long-range maritime drones<\/a> for Arctic surveillance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the Coast Guard, currently the only U.S. surface presence in the region, is short on ships. It has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2025\/05\/09\/us-coast-guard-to-add-heavy-icebreaker-amid-shipbuilding-overhaul\/\" rel=\"\">in dire need of icebreakers<\/a> for years, prompting an April 9 executive order by President Donald Trump to improve maritime security in the Arctic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sunday, the Coast Guard commissioned its first polar icebreaker, the cutter Storis, in 25 years. The Storis is a refurbished oilfield supply ship, formerly known as the Aiviq. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis region is undergoing monumental change. Sea ice is receding. New trade routes are opening. Vast reserves of natural resources are becoming accessible. And our adversaries are moving fast to assert control,\u201d U.S. Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, who commissioned the vessel, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sullivan.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sen-sullivan-coast-guard-commandant-commission-icebreaker-storis-in-juneau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sullivan.senate.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/sen-sullivan-coast-guard-commandant-commission-icebreaker-storis-in-juneau\">release.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are warning signs. If we\u2019re not ready to lead in the Arctic, others will \u2014 and they\u2019ll be happy to do it for us,&#8221; Sullivan said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The presence of
