{"id":80073,"date":"2024-08-28T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-28T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/08\/28\/legion-officials-jab-harris-trump-for-skipping-veterans-conventions\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:57:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:57:12","slug":"legion-officials-jab-harris-trump-for-skipping-veterans-conventions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2024\/08\/28\/legion-officials-jab-harris-trump-for-skipping-veterans-conventions\/","title":{"rendered":"Legion officials jab Harris, Trump for skipping veterans conventions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American Legion\u2019s top official on Tuesday sharply criticized both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2024\/08\/06\/kamala-harris-taps-tim-walz-national-guard-veteran-as-running-mate\/\" target=\"_blank\">Vice President Kamala Harris<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/08\/20\/trump-clarifies-medal-of-honor-comments-calls-it-the-ultimate-honor\/\" target=\"_blank\">former president Donald Trump<\/a> \u2014 the major party nominees to become the next president \u2014 for skipping the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/08\/30\/suicide-prevention-campaign-urges-vets-to-be-the-one-who-reaches-out\/\" target=\"_blank\">major veterans organizations\u2019 conventions<\/a> this summer, saying both candidates need to do more to prioritize veterans issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know both of you have a tremendous campaigning schedule, and I know yours prevented you from actually gracing us with your presence [at this event],\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legion.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Legion National Commander Daniel Seehafer<\/a> said in a speech at the group\u2019s convention in New Orleans on Aug. 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, let\u2019s have no conflict in getting together. We want to be the first called and the first seated at your presidential table, if elected, when you come together and discuss these life changing and life-saving issues that affect us, veterans and families.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American Legion\u2019s summer convention and other similar gatherings from groups like the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans typically draw tens of thousands of veterans from around the country to discuss major veterans policy and outreach issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/08\/30\/suicide-prevention-campaign-urges-vets-to-be-the-one-who-reaches-out\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LegionSuicide.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Suicide prevention campaign urges vets to \u2018be the one\u2019 who reaches out<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">American Legion officials hope new partnerships and more focused discussions will amplify their campaign.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Legion\u2019s is the last major one this cycle. AMVETS held their convention last week in North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The large veterans events have been a regular stop for presidential candidates and the sitting commander-in-chief for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Trump and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/2016\/08\/31\/clinton-promises-reform-warns-of-disaster-during-american-legion-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\">Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton<\/a> addressed the Legion\u2019s convention in 2016 ahead of their election showdown. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney appeared at the Legion event in 2012, while then-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/veterans\/2014\/08\/26\/obama-to-announce-va-initiatives-today-at-american-legion-convention\/?contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8&amp;contentQuery=%7B%22includeSections%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22excludeSections%22%3A%22%22%2C%22feedSize%22%3A10%2C%22feedOffset%22%3A5%7D\" target=\"_blank\">President Barack Obama<\/a> spoke at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention a few weeks earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before President Joe Biden took office, every incumbent president had been to at least one of the major veterans conventions during his term in office, dating back to at least the administration of Harry S. Truman in the 1940s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, when most of the conventions were moved online or dramatically scaled down during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in America, both Trump and then-Democratic presidential candidate Biden were unable to attend the events. Since Biden was elected, he has sent video messages to the gatherings, but not appeared in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legion officials said they invited both Harris and Trump to resume the tradition, but were rebuffed. Trump initially agreed to speak at the event, but backed out in recent days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump did speak earlier this week to the National Guard Association of the United States conference in Detroit, where he mentioned issues including veterans homelessness and trust in Veterans Affairs operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Seehafer, whose organization boasts roughly 1.6 million members nationwide, said officials there hope for more attention and inclusion in either candidate\u2019s future plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy friend, President Trump, if you truly want to make America great again, don\u2019t ever forget to make our veterans great too,\u201d he said. \u201cFor without great veterans, there\u2019s no greatness in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd Vice President Harris, also my friend \u2026 we hear you talk about joy and democracy on your campaign trail, but you don\u2019t forget who defended and who continues to defend that democracy. I think some people forget that freedom isn\u2019t free.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Legion convention runs through Thursday. Officials have already announced the 2025 convention will take place in Tampa, Florida, in late August of next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Legion officials said they
