{"id":80082,"date":"2024-08-28T13:44:48","date_gmt":"2024-08-28T13:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/08\/28\/trump-campaign-denies-fighting-with-arlington-national-cemetery-staff\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T16:00:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T16:00:41","slug":"trump-campaign-denies-fighting-with-arlington-national-cemetery-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2024\/08\/28\/trump-campaign-denies-fighting-with-arlington-national-cemetery-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump campaign denies fighting with Arlington National Cemetery staff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials with former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2024\/08\/26\/trump-promises-to-launch-space-national-guard-if-elected\/\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s reelection campaign are denying reports that they sparred with staff at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2020\/06\/15\/as-space-concerns-mount-at-arlington-national-cemetery-officials-move-to-expand-historic-site\/\" target=\"_blank\">Arlington National Cemetery<\/a> during an event Monday, insisting they had permission for photo ops and meetings at the memorial site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Republican presidential nominee visited the Virginia cemetery to participate in a wreath-laying ceremony and meet with family members of troops killed in the Afghanistan withdrawal in August 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TrumpWarRoom\/status\/1828076046215688417\" target=\"_blank\">posed for photos with those individuals in Section 60<\/a> of the cemetery, where many troops killed in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are buried. Shots of Trump smiling and giving a thumbs-up sign alongside service members\u2019 tombstones drew criticism from opponents who accused him of politicking at the hallowed site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/08\/27\/nx-s1-5091154\/trump-arlington-cemetery\" target=\"_blank\">NPR reported on Tuesday <\/a>that during the visit, a cemetery official tried to prevent Trump staffers from filming and photographing in Section 60, but the individual was verbally abused and shoved aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung wrote on social media that the NPR account was untrue and that \u201cwe were granted access to have a photographer there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican staffers also posted a message from five family members of fallen troops who said they had given approval for photos to be taken with them and \u201cwe are deeply grateful to the [former] president for taking the time to honor our children and for standing alongside us in our grief.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"zxx\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/jlCSAV5png\">pic.twitter.com\/jlCSAV5png<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Trump War Room (@TrumpWarRoom) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TrumpWarRoom\/status\/1828634037591720433?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 28, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, Arlington National Cemetery confirmed that a report had been filed on the altercation, but offered no further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFederal law prohibits political campaign or election-related activities within Army National Military Cemeteries, to include photographers, content creators or any other persons attending for purposes, or in direct support of a partisan political candidate\u2019s campaign,\u201d the statement said. \u201cArlington National Cemetery reinforced and widely shared this law and its prohibitions with all participants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s appearance at Arlington came on the three-year anniversary of the killing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2024\/04\/24\/pentagon-disputes-report-of-firefight-following-abbey-gate-bombing\/\" target=\"_blank\">13 U.S. service members at Hamid Karzai International Airport,<\/a> during the final days of the American military presence in Afghanistan. Republican officials and family members of the fallen troops have repeatedly criticized President Joe Biden for his decisions leading up to the suicide bombing that killed the service members as well as 170 Afghan civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after Trump\u2019s visit to Arlington, family members joined Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance on a media call accusing Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris \u2014 the Democratic nominee for president \u2014 of abandoning military families and Afghan civilians by too quickly pulling troops out of Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Arlington National Cemetery isn&#39;t a place for campaign photo-ops. The former president clarified that both medals are prestigious, but that the military award, which requires an individual\u2019s life to be in danger, is \u201cthe ultimate\u201d honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GOP officials have spent the last several weeks attacking Harris\u2019s running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, for a series of questions surrounding his 24 years in the National Guard. They have accused him of using the wrong rank in public speeches and leaving his unit ahead of a deployment to Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials with the Harris campaign have
