Officials said the moves did not impact any mission critical jobs, but did not provide any specifics of the types of assignments that were eliminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese and other recent personnel decisions are extraordinarily difficult, but VA is focused on allocating its resources to help as many Veterans, families, caregivers and survivors as possible,\u201d VA Secretary Doug Collins <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-dismisses-more-than-1400-probationary-employees\/\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThese moves will not hurt VA health care, benefits or beneficiaries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said specifically that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2025\/02\/14\/va-dismisses-over-1000-employees-as-part-of-probationary-worker-purge\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Crisis Line responders <\/a>were not affected by the latest or past dismissals. But workers within the department said that support staff for the crisis line were among the workers let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2025\/02\/24\/va-secretary-emphasizes-reforms-accountability-for-federal-workforce\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-2194532748.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA secretary emphasizes reforms, accountability for federal workforce<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">In his first public address to a veterans group, Doug Collins outlined plans to broaden VA benefits and cut back bureaucracy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins insisted that the dismissals will produce \u201ca change for the better\u201d at the department. Officials estimate the job eliminations will save about $83 million annually, money that will be reassigned to other benefits and health care priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Feb. 13, VA leaders announced they would lay off about 1,000 probationary employees from non-bargaining units, a move they claimed would save about $98 million. In January, the department dismissed about 60 employees whose work focused on diversity and inclusion efforts, which President Donald Trump has labeled as harmful to the workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nearly 2,500 employees forced out of Veterans Affairs so far amounts to about 0.5% of the nearly 480,000 department workforce. Officials have not said how many workers have taken voluntary buyouts offered by the White House in the last few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like past workforce reductions, Monday\u2019s move drew immediate condemnation from Democratic lawmakers on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am deeply disturbed by Secretary Collins\u2019 continued actions that are harming veterans, military spouses, civil servants and their families,\u201d said Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., ranking member of the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee. \u201cTo say that these firings will not affect veterans\u2019 care and benefits is a lie.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee ranking member Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., echoed those concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDoug Collins continues to put the interests of veterans last with additional indiscriminate firings of VA employees who serve veterans, including patient-facing employees,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese men and women were arbitrarily fired because Doug Collins views them as nothing more than a statistic for his press release. Make no mistake, these actions are destroying the trust veterans have in VA and will do long-term damage to VA\u2019s ability to recruit and retain talented doctors, nurses and others wanting to pursue a career serving veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA has about 40,000 probationary employees across the country, but officials said most are exempt from personnel actions because they serve in mission-critical positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also said that about two-thirds of all VA positions are exempt from a federal hiring freeze put in place by Trump in January. But lawmakers and VA workers have said that efforts to fill those posts have slowed in recent weeks as managers try to wade through the new administration\u2019s employment
